And -- let\'s be honest -- it could be a boon to Merrimack Valley residents looking for local news and traffic reports at the beginning of the day.

Yep, because only college students listen to radio stations run out of postsecondary institutions... bullshit. I doubt the newspaper would have bothered to buy time for a show if they did not think people other than the college students listened to the station. This definitely threatens the indepedence of the station, especially if MediaNews Corp. decides the slant of certain programs near their own news block hurts their own listenership. Really, even \"corporate underwriting\" involves the businesses\' names being mentioned on-air at some point in the broadcast, on a regular basis. It\'s about one step from advertising, similar to the misleading ads from oil companies demonstrating their \"committment to the environment\", as if funding a corporate-run news program on a college radio station mitigates any harmful actions they\'re engaging in. Think this is scaremongering? Just wait.

My new book, Foul Ball, tells you all you need to know about Dean Singleton\'s influence on his Massachusetts media properties. Foul Ball should be required reading for UMASS officials. Where can I send a copy? Jim Bouton
