Don\'t get me wrong, but why is everyone most shocked about the death of Carlo? He was engaged in warfare against the police, plain and simple.
Those that do this need to consider the possible consequences. Personally, what I find most shocking is the mass beating of peaceful activists sleeping at one of the social centers, and then later forced to sing fascist songs in jail. This was not fucking police self-defense.

I wasn\'t shocked by it, just angry. They set the priorities, they could have refused to hold the meeting but hey didn\'t. Instead the chose to go ahead with a situtation they knew could have cause a death to happen.

I\'m on shocked by the beating of the sleeping activists either, I know what the police job is, it\'s to beat up anyone who opposes the system (peaceful or not).

Your last comment is a bit disturbing, I take it to mean that if the police are attacked then the attacker pretty much deserves what they get.

The debate about violence/non-violence, attack or self-defence, etc etc is distracting. The bottom line of the situation is that if they meet we\'ll attack because we have no faith in non-violent tactics in these situations (for the most part) and if they kill one of us in the process we\'ll hold it against them.

look, james, see if you can understand this. at the time he was shot, carlo was holding a fire extinguisher to his chest. he did not break the windows of the cop car involved, nor did he assault or threaten anyone in it. this, you would have us believe, is \"..warfare against the police, plain and simple\".

\"at the time he was shot, carlo was holding a fire extinguisher to his chest. he did not break the windows of the cop car involved, nor did he assault or threaten anyone in it.\"

It\'s clear that the guy was holding a fire extinguisher to his chest. To the people in the jeep did this look like a shield or was he going to throw it? As for the context of the situation, correct me if I\'m wrong, these cops were cornered with masked individuals rushing at them. Were they there to persuade the cops of their bad ways or wanting to spill blood? Given that previously it was known that the police were detaining and torturing people around the G8 Summit and given the whole police-fascist historical connection in Italy, I think everyone knew what was on the minds of most italians in the black bloc.

\"Your last comment is a bit disturbing, I take it to mean that if the police are attacked then the attacker pretty much deserves what they get\"

No, I\'m on the side of the black bloc, (minus the nazis that masked up and went along smashing small shops and workers cars to provide a popular justification for police repression). Let\'s just say I wouldn\'t be sad if a few italian cops were killed. I am sad but not too surprised that Carlo is no longer here.

In street war people don\'t respect human rights, international law, or civil norms, and never will. This is something that many Americans coming from the Ghandiesque Left need to understand. The state will defend itself by any means necessary. So will we... Beating the people sleeping at the social center was not a defense move.

actually he had just picked up the fire extinguisher after the cops in the car had thrown it out, and i think he may have put it down just as he was shot.

actually if you look at the scene carlos and a group of 5 to 10 other people are approaching and assaulting the police jeep. on the passenger side of the jeep a guy has a 2x8 board rammed through the window. if you look at the series of pictures, carlos approaches with others, picks up the fire extinguisher and begins to lift it as if to throw it. he had it above his chest, and he was not about to hand it back to the cops cuz they dropped it. he was going to throw it at the cop and hopefully knock the fucker out.

carlos died battling for a world he believed in, as do thousands do everyday around the world. don\'t play down their struggle by turning them into liberal do-nothings. pay honor to their willingness to fight. and take up where they left off.
