\"(b) CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS- (1) Any person who claims, because of religious training and belief (as defined in section 6(j) of the Military Selective Service Act (50 U.S.C. 456(j))), exemption from combatant training included as part of the program of basic military training and education and whose claim is sustained by the local board shall, when inducted, participate in basic military training and education that does not include any combatant training component. The person may be transferred to a national service program, as provided in section 4(d).\"

That is what they consider a conscientious objector? It is not like those can be said to be influenced by conscience, but by their religious dogma. I would call a conscientious objector someone who is bothered serving in military that bombs people to further their own nations heghemony.

Well... You can only be drafted if you register. Do most anarchists register with selective services? Personally, I am going to be turning 18 soon, and I plan on not registering.

well. they can\'t draft me. I am a Transsexual Anarchist. I don\'t think they want someone like me in the military. As far as not regestering with the selective service. Its a crime not to register. I don\'t know what the penalty is or how easy it is to get busted. if many people don\'t register I wonder if they would try to bust them all?.

If I\'m not mistaken, anarchists aren\'t allowed in the military, and foreign anarchists are technically not allowed in the country, though enforcement is an entirely different matter.

This bill would mandate a year of military training for young men, and make it available to female volunteers. If I understand Section 13 right, it\'s not a bill to draft people into active duty. Yet.

It seems like this would be a kind of mandatory national military service without being on active duty. It still sucks.

And yes, Nikkos, they are saying that only a religious test shall matter as regards Conscientious Objection. And these people would still have to be brainw--, I mean, *educated* in \"physical fitness, international relations, military tactics, homeland security, United States and world history, vocational training, and such other topics as the Secretary considers appropriate\", but without \"any combatant training component.\"

(And I thought the right wing in this country didn\'t want the Federal Government involved in education!)

Unlike during the Vietnam War, there appears to be no exemption for men in college or men who are married. Maybe that would be left up to the local draft boards.

I hope this does not go through.

About registersting for Selective service. I registered because otherwise I couldnt get some state money down here to go to college. My friend is 18 and hasn\'t and in fact a lot of people don\'t register just because they don\'t feel like it. FBI won\'t raid your house if you don\'t well not yet at least.

i just turned eighteen and have not registered yet. i was wavering for many reasons on both sides of the issue, but i believe this just decided for me (NOT to register).

from what i understand, not registering is a federal crime, but no one has been prosecuted for it since the late seventies. if you don\'t register, you are not eligible for any sort of federal aid or student loans. but who needs their blood money?

Dont worry, im almost 22, and still havent registered for the Selective Service (SS), and i havnet heard shit from the Govt about except a few postcards bluffing jail time. You will not be eligible for student loans however, and someone told me something about not getting Social Security when you turn 65, but im not sure. Once you make it to 25, you can run around shouting that you havent registered, and they cant do anything. So yeah, dont register, cause it hasnt been enforced since 1983, and only then it was because it was a high profile case of War Resisters.

Sometimes they come to your house if you don\'t sign up for selective service. This happened to one of my friends a few years back. But for those who can find a way to get out of signing that fucking slip they send you in the mail. More power to you. If they get you, then fucking run to Canada or to Mexico and then catch a plane to Cuba.

Draft Dodger Rag
By Phil Ochs

I\'m just a typical American boy from a typical American town

I believe in God and Senator Dodd and keeping old Castro down

And when it came my time to serve I knew better dead than red

But when I got to my old draft board, buddy, this is what I said:

Sarge, I\'m only eighteen, I got a ruptured spleen
And I always carry a purse
I got eyes like a bat, my feet are flat, and my asthma\'s getting worse

O think of my career, my sweetheart dear, and my poor old invalid aunt
Besides, I ain\'t no fool, I\'m a goin\' to school, and I\'m working in a defense plant

I\'ve got a dislocated disc and a racked up back
I\'m allergic to flowers and bugs
And when the bombshell hits, I get epileptic fits
And I\'m addicted to a thousand drugs
I got the weakness woes, and I can\'t touch my toes
I can hardly reach my knees
And if the enemy came close to me
I\'d probably start to sneeze

(chorus)

I hate Chou En Lai, and I hope he dies,
but one thing you gotta see
That someone\'s gotta go over there
and that someone isn\'t me
So I wish you well, Sarge, give \'em Hell
Yeah, Kill me a thousand or so
And if you ever get a war without blood and gore
Well I\'ll be the first to go

(chorus)

well...i can say this...i personally am a pussy :P

I don\'t want to be drafted, dont plan to be drafted, and dammit i have the money to not be drafted.

But still, why in the hell are they instating the draft again?

It\'s not like we\'re at war with anyone...they\'ve gt like 23409823409823409823409823409823402984 troops over there searching for a guy that\'s supposedly already died to kidney failure.

Yes I am proud to be an American...though I plan to be moving to Australia soon, but that\'s beside the point.

Either way, I don\'t think it will pass, and if it does, they cant exactly make all of us (I\'ll be 20 in 3 months) join the draft.

What if say, 2,000,000 people refuse? Are they going to lock us all up? :P

Just my two cents.

Go to washington and rip their empire down brick by brick. Let the american public know we live and the media will not be able to ignore our screams of soliderity. SEC. 15. TRANSITIONAL PROVISION.

A person who has obtained a high school diploma or its equivalent before January 1, 2003, shall not be subject to the
obligation under section 3(a) to receive basic military training and education under this Act.

Most of you are *okay*. My brother on the other hand...
Furthermore, this isn\'t a draft, this is 6 months to 1 year of training and education of some sort;
not, \"let\'s go to another country and kill mother fuckers for a while.\"

What strikes me as ludicrous is how under-the-radar this thing is at this point. Most people have heard nothing of it. Personally, I\'m not that scared because I was a bit messed up in my high school years, and am left with a history of psychiatric help/commitments and a lot of self-inflicted scars, I think I could probably dodge service on mental health grounds (anyone know anything about this?) even if I can\'t get CO status (my father was a CO, my parents are buddhists). None the less, this is absolute crap. True, Switzerland has a similar program, but they also don\'t go tromping around the world killing people for oil.

Why does someone need to be in the military to be \'serving their country\'.
What kind of stupid logic created that notion. So if you have a job and or are doing service to the community or are getting an education or mabye participating in politics it means youre a traitor and not serving your country?

Why does someone need to kill to serve their country? What if i don\'t want to fight for a system that i believe isnt helping the world, im willing to fight for what i believe in but simply put, i dont believe in the west enough to kill or be killed for it.

Try and get it through your heads that there are people with jobs and an education who don\'t believe in the system. Realise that they are not all lazy bums living in a gutter.

Mabye by not doing service many of these people are protecting what so many died for.

I sincerely hope that this bill does not become a law. Not because I think that it is unreasonable to expect someone to give a couple of years in defense of their country, but because I wouldn\'t want to serve with a bunch of cowardly, ungrateful pussies like vast the majority of the people who have commented on this.
The United States of America is not perfect. Only an idiot would claim that our politicians and our foreign policy is free from error. However, because of the safeguards in our Constitution, we are allowed to speak our minds, practice our religion, and basically do whatever we want as long as we don\'t infringe on the rights of others.
We have the best roads in the world. Healthcare is available for everyone. If you can\'t pay, then there are charitable organizations (to whom I give money) that will pay for your operation (the Shriners are the best example). Education is free for everyone until you are 18, and most people are able to afford it after that. The disadvantaged are taken care of, if they allow themselves to be. Americans live better than anybody else in the world, and yet all you whiny bitches can do is complain because there is a \"proposed bill\" that might require you to give something back. Your attitudes are disgusting.

Ya, a lot to be thankful for. Like NAFTA and how it made sure jobs didn\'t leave the country and drive down wages. And how immigrants aren\'t being arrested and suspected of terrorism because they aren\'t white. And civil liberties, well those are just as strong as ever....oh wait.

I can\'t believe some people can think that forcing others to kill and die is acceptable. Their whole reason for loving America is because there is so much \"freedom\" yet they are ok with forced indoctrination and brain washing.

Think about why this is being proposed. There isn\'t a shortage of people who want to be soldiers, more people are volunteering. And people would be forced to serve \"not less than six months, but not more than one year\" not a very long time. This seems like a step towards a more militarized society, not an actual necessity. Imagine that after a few generations of people going through this training the public begins to get more and more accustomed to war. Eventually there will be less and less dissent when the U.S. invades a country.

A wise man once told me that military conscription is such a Totalitarian idea that you could deduce the whole system from it, in much the same way that all of Euclidean Geometry can be deduced from the idea that a line only has one other parrellel line.(For those of you who fall under section 4b of the proposed bill, Totalitarianism is a system of government in which total power is given to a single individual or group of individuals. Hmm, sound familiar? *Cough*Taliban*Cough*) Personally, while I am generally opposed to war, I beleive that people should have the right to fight for their country VOLANTARILY. The trouble with conscription is that it gives the government the power to force people to fight and die for their country, when this may run contrary to their own ideas and beleifs. Military and it\'s justification isn\'t the issue here. Neither is \"giving something back.\" What is the issue is a proposed bill that would force those of us who say no to subgegate our wills to a supposedly free government. In one month I turn eighteen, and when I do I plan to register for selective services, then tell Uncle Sam to fuck himself up the ass with a sandpaper dildo if he comes knocking at my door telling me that he wants me. If this lands me in prison, so be it. Greater men then I have gone to prison. In the words of Thoreau, \"In a country that imprisons injustly, the one true place for a just man is also a prison.\"

My father was a vietnam veteran who was drafted and served in the war. And from what I\'ve heard from him war is truly hell and I don\'t feel that anybody who doesn\'t want to risk they\'re life for their country should be forced to. I love my country but I hate my government and despite this I tried to enlist in the army months before September 11\'th in order to get an education as a mechanic and money for college since my family can\'t afford to put me through school. However I have open criminal cases and the Military is able to accept people with a criinal record depending on the number of charges and types of crimes. But I\'ve been arrested since then and if I am found guilty I will not be eligable for Military service. Which suits me just fine because I think Americas involvement in Afghanistan is just the beginning of a new larger scale war which will see this nation annexing many Middle Eastern Countries in the quest for oil and money, pherhaps even the beginning of WW III. Maybe a large scale war overseas could spark a revolution in this country and if Libertarian Communism was this revolutions cause I would gladly give my life for that war.
