OK, I found this article which shows that Goldman had more advanced attitudes about homosexuality than many of her contemporaries, but the quote I used earler is clearly appealing to homophobic sentiment.

Right, but it was a different time. Goldman was out in the forefront in terms of the sexual and gender radicalism.

When I first scanned this piece for the Internet back in 1992-93, I was also struck by the inclusion of figures about military expenditures. Maybe back then people responded better to statistics. That approach doesn't work these days with Americans, who prefer to be ignorant, misinformed and easily swayed by idiotic emotional arguments.

It would be good to see more contemporary anarchist writing on patriotism. I saw a one page essay today that was written by somebody here in KC. I'll see if they will let us publish it here.
