Yes, great difficulty exists in communication with those who already have their arguments in place. The speaker of this story seems to having a speaking style in which the listener is assumed to share the same goals and possess a lot of the same knowledge. Both these assumptions are untrue when it comes to the typical person attending meetings such as these.

when arguing with this type it's important to be clear, be consice, and have data and examples to throw at them that negates their arguments. You need to be the one who throws them off balance, and you need to keep to the point at hand. Getting off topic and generalizing are openings that the attack debater can exploit.
