I really think that the rest should be translated into Spanish. I'm also weary about the whole idea of white activists encouraging people to stop working who have more to lose doing so than we would. I think this needs to be framed as a solidarity action which I don't think is the message given off by this flyer.

i have to agree, it's pretty stupid that the text of the flyer is only in
english. if you are going to pull spanish speakers into a flyer with a
spanish headline, you need to have some spanish text.

A lot of immigrants (not all) speak Spanish, but keep in mind they may also speak English.

And since not every immigrant is Spanish-speaking, but yet faces many of the same challenges as Spanish-speaking immigrants, I think these fliers are appropriate.

There's nothing stopping Spanish-speaking immigrants from organizing. They've already done it themselves, quite recently if you'll recall, far greater than anything white Americans have done in ages.

What makes you think Spanish-speaking immigrants are incapable? They're the driving force behind this year's May Day. Don't kid yourself!

i don't think anyone questioned immigrants ability to organize. what was
questioned was the organizing technique of using spanish headlines, but no
spanish text. can a lot immigrants speak/read english? yes. but many can
not. and if you believe that many can read english, why any spanish at all?
was it for a stylistic effect? again i stand by original slam that it is probably
more of white activists using cultural appropriation.

also people proclaim that immigrants were active in the plans for these
mayday activities. fine. great. awesome. but were they active in making the
flyer? any review? any input? or was it just assumed o.k. by osmosis? i would
assume that if people were asked for input (almost making it participatory)
they would have asked to have the text in spanish also.

As the author of the previous comment, to which you replied, thanks for responding. You make some good points. I agree now, the slice of Spanish seems out of place and I question why it is there.

However, do we know who made the flier and under what circumstances? I would prefer not to make assumptions... it's hard to do sometimes, but it keeps me from judging people.

In my position, speaking for myself, I would make an English-only flier. My Spanish-speaking friends could do Spanish if they choose.

this is only one of the many flyers and banners on their site's index, some are only in spanish, some only in english, some have both.

bravo, but it should be pointed out that these flyers are not for events in NJ as
one commentor mentions, they are for events in LA.

also it is interesting that all of the spanish flyers were posted after the criticism
started. probably a coincidence.

anyway, good luck!

Many of the groups working on this in Northern NJ are latino community groups. I think they are tired of the white paternal liberals trying to co-opt their struggle.

No doubt. If you can show solidarity- dont make cheesy flyers and expect to be welcomed in to a grassroots labor struggle- just show up to the protests- make your voice heard- strike- do whatever you can- just dont pretend to be 'down' by doing things like making flyers that offend people...and yes I am latino- I am offended by your attempt

are those the groups that made the flyer? or are you bi-lingual by association,
osmosis or something like that?

what part of "general strike" didn't you understand? it's not an immigrant only strike, or a latino only strike, it's for anyone and everyone who sees the injustice in HR447 and this whole system.

i resigned the title activist a long time ago. i'm not an activist. i work full time in retail for shit pay. i'm not a student. but i am not about to criticize "white activists" if they happen to be students or from different backgrounds for taking part in or supporting a general strike called by latino org's who are the only ones with enough, let's call it gravitas, to actually call one.

listen, it's not about you being an appropriately white-guilt laden leftist. there's nothing to prove; so just stop criticizing and start encouraging and agitating.
