The Red and the Rainbow: The Life and Work of Daniel Guérin

Cole Stangler
Dissent Magazine
Spring 2017

Class traitors are a rare breed. Some young bourgeois like to experiment but most end up repenting for their political transgressions. There are more Hitchenses than Guevaras; more David Horowitzes than Tariq Alis; more Brit Humes than John Reeds. After one’s newfound politics suffer a few rounds of defeat or fall out of fashion—or both—the home-spun comforts of privilege seem to have a way of making themselves hard to resist.

Anarchists Fill Services Void Left by Faltering Greek Governance

By NIKI KITSANTONIS
New York Times
MAY 22, 2017

ATHENS — It may seem paradoxical, but Greece’s anarchists are organizing like never before.

Seven years of austerity policies and a more recent refugee crisis have left the government with fewer and fewer resources, offering citizens less and less. Many have lost faith. Some who never had faith in the first place are taking matters into their own hands, to the chagrin of the authorities.

Turkey: Meydan anarchists — ‘we are being cornered’

Freedom newspaper (UK)

We are being cornered

With the fear and shock that constantly oppresses our lives, with the agendas that change by the day, by the hour, with the constant repetition we see in news articles, debates, newspapers and radios, with the shares and retweets, the media that takes us for idiots and is fed by manipulation, with the gentrification and demolition policies that erase our past, our identity and our memory, with the “illusion of democracy” that weakens and imprisons our freedom, and with the reality that becomes more and more incomprehensible everyday, we are being cornered.

Anarchy in the UK: A Changed Political Landscape

Originally published by Freedom, December 7, 2016

https://freedomnews.org.uk/anarchy-in-the-uk-a-changed-political-landscape/

This article is the first in a series by Jon Bigger looking at gains the voices of social conservatism have made in recent years and what that means for anarchist politics.

In Britain, the much of the left has put it's heart and soul (and hundreds of thousands of activist hours) into keeping a left-wing leader at the top of the Labour Party. They seem to have spent more time doing that than getting stuck into the ruling class, although I suspect they think this is exactly what they've been doing.

Anarchism, Oppression & Exploitation

WSM position paper

This paper outlines how we the intersections of exploitation and oppressions and what approach the WSM takes in relation to this.  Our collective theoretical understanding is framed in the WSM Constitution's core point of unity number 7: "We actively oppose all manifestations of prejudice within the workers' movement and society in general and we work alongside those struggling against racism, sexism,[religious]sectarianism and homophobia as a priority. We see the success of a revolution and the successful elimination of these oppressions after the revolution being determined by the building of such struggles in the pre-revolutionary period. The methods of struggle that we promote are a preparation for the running of society along anarchist and communist lines after the revolution."

On his Facebook page, the international volunteer, who was amongst the group killed by Turkish warplanes wrote:

“We were taking a small village when we got hit by Turkish jets in the night. Two of my friends, Anton and Michael were killed among many others. I’m staying to finish out my six months. Fuck Erdogan and Fuck Turkey.”

The YPG have informed both men’s families.

Critique and Renewal: The Institute for Anarchist Studies at Twenty

by Chuck Morse

I played a pivotal role in the early history of the Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS). I conceived of it, drafted all the founding documents, selected the initial Board of Directors, led early fundraising campaigns, and anchored it as a whole. Although I have had little to do with the IAS since leaving it in 2005, my years with the organization were an important—and positive—experience for me. I appreciate that Perspectives editors asked me to share my reflections on the occasion of the group’s twentieth anniversary.
