So maybe you’re asking why?

Street parades and celebrations have more or less vanished from working class culture, and that is what the “Funeral March for Capitalism” is hoping to restore in some ways. We hope to create an event that people of all backgrounds can participate in, or watch, and feel included in a celebration for the death of a bad idea. That bad idea of course is capitalism. Thus, using spectacle, we hope to re- ignite the consciousness that was aroused (on a broad scale) a year and a half ago, to create new opportunities for organizing against capitalism, and all of its oppressive structures.

Along with this destruction of trade unions and collective bargaining, the current political climate has destroyed and even criminalized the elements of working class power, which made possible the great anti-racist movements, among others. It has done this largely by pitting the classes and the races against each other. We are of course, attempting to create and experience that unites people seeking alternatives to the current system in a way that is inclusive to all races, and will foster further communication amongst people.

The internet, while a fine organizing tool, has also aided in the fragmentation of American society which has made it difficult to organize large protests. The most exciting and touching experience in a large street demonstration is that of seeing, of touching, of being shoulder to shoulder enjoying the real world with very different others. It is also not only about chanting slogans, and speaking truth to power, but about creating a vision of a new world together. While the Funeral March isn’t directly aimed at racism, it encourages working class solidarity by creating a tangible experience where people of different races can work together to create a spectacle with a message. We also hope to empower people of different races to create their own artistic expressions against racism, sexism, capitalism, and all forms of oppression with the tools of puppetry and street performance.
