The student newspaper at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reported in its police blotter today that another vandalism has occurred against a fraternity. Reports the Daily Tar Heel, "Someone damaged property at Chi Omega at 313 E. Franklin St. between 3:30 and 3:45 am Friday, according to Chapel Hill police reports. The person threw an object into a window and broke it, reports state."

This was the third or fourth such act to occur within the last two months at the University, which has recently been plagued by bad press for its role in suppressing information about sexual assault on campus, and, after five students submitted a complaint to the US Department of Education, in turn threatening to expel via Honor Court one of the five women for creating an "intimidating environment" on campus for her rapist. The administration and Honor Court's handling of events has resulted in an uproar, with large amounts of bad press, two protests, a wave of graffiti and wheatpasting on campus, and apparently more attacks on fraternities.

A brief timeline:

January 14th - In the early morning hours, anarchists smashed five windows of the Chi Psi frat house on Cameron Ave, releasing a communique on War on Society blog stating "All fraternities are sites of conscious self-organization for patriarchal power and the homophobia that supports it. They exist to convert this power into real capital. Solidarity with all those imprisoned or facing imprisonment for defending themselves against homophobic or transphobic violence.”

January 18th - News emerged about a complain filed with US Dept. of Education by five women who have been raped at UNC, claiming "that UNC violated the rights of sexual assault victims and facilitated a hostile environment for students reporting sexual assault."

February 17th - Early in the morning a window was found smashed out of a car in the parking lot of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house.

February 17th - Later that afternoon, a rock was thrown into a window at the house after Sigma Phi Epsilon member David Stewart got into a dispute with a group of people in the house’s front yard. According to a comment by one of the fraternity members, the crowd was dressed in black and screaming, "racist" and "sexist" at members on the lawn.

February 22nd - Landen Gambill, one of the five survivors involved in the US Department of Education complaint, was charged with a conduct violation of the University’s Honor Code that claims she engaged in disruptive or intimidating behavior against the man who raped her.

February 26th - A small protest and press conference was held on a university lawn in solidarity with Gambill and calling for the charges to be dropped.

February 28th - A larger protest is held in the same location, with 300 people attending, massive media presence, and a large black banner reading "Intimidate Rapists." One of the protesters ask the banner to be taken down in respect to "nonviolence"; others clap in support. Hundreds of posters appear glued around campus surrounding topics like consent, bashing back against rapists, and believing survivors.

March 1st - In the early hours of the morning a window is smashed out at Chi Omega fraternity house, unclear if related to ongoing struggles on campus.

A series of ten different posters themed around "Rape Culture is..." have appeared on campus; they are not specific to UNC or Chapel Hill, and can be downloaded here for general distribution.
