Ghost Rider Roads, Revisited

Indigenous

I finished the second edition of a book released last year at this time: Ghost Rider Roads, about the American Indian Movement. (AIM).  The new, revised, 2nd edition was just released three days ago, January 14, 2013.  It had been inside a bag of rocks stuffed in the embroidered, hand-stitched shoulder bag from Guatemala which I travel with, for years really. Weighing me down. Phew.  The trek lightweight now, that the rock people stories are freed.  Interestingly. My  favorite section in the new edition is “rock garden hearts”.   The first edition of Ghost Rider Roads (still in print) was a tribute to Leonard Peltier.  I created an entire section for the man, the victim of circumstance, the legendary political prisoner taken from Indian Country before his Prime, by FBI, irate white boys who may always hate Indians.  Because Indians remind white men—even well intentioned lawyers---that this country, this “united” states, will NEVER be conquered, nor “owned” entirely.

Ghost Rider Roads, Revisited

Ashland, Ore.  Jan 17, 2013.  So. As writers when we get upset or emotional or clearly foggy about what is real and what is a speedway down into wrong way traffic, we collect. Words.  Ideas.  Feelings.  And then pull out paper, pen or these. Days.  Laptops and keyboards, wordocs and blogs.

The Black Hills STILL belong to the Lakota, a trust fund with millions, sitting in Washington D.C.  They refuse to cash in on it, as they always said the treaty was coerced, and they will not sell their Land.  Yep.  Indians, old AIM, Peltier, books and stories about the Current Indian Wars, just bring up too much discomfort, for most.  So.  Indians, our “causes” our lives our stories.  Are relegated to entertainment.  “First they took their land, then they made movies about taking their land”.  John Lennon early 1970’s about the “Red Man” irreverent situation. And inevitable revolution.

This second edition is more me, and what I believe needed to be freed. From the stories.  And well.  Some people hate freedom.  They are threatened by songs.  They like the roar of greed in the machinery of their enslaved minds.  Yep. So. Just after the book came out (Jan. 2013),  all the same old tactics emerged.  Computer hackings, old “friends” gone silent,  people in the book like deer in the headlights of a tank salvaged from Wounded Knee, 1973.  Wait tanks don’t have headlights.  I guess these people are more like the tanks when they run out of fuel.  No place to go.  Stand still.  Listen. Hope for a rescue.  So I write this tonight.  And say this again.   I tell the stories because they are all that is left of us.  Because I lived these things, and live them still.  The U.S. war on Indians was/is just that, a war.  And although I was told just today in an email that “AIM IS DISGUSTING’  and to shut up about what they did right, I will not go quietly. The book is out.  And I am still, alive.  AIM defended the old timers, the young children, the land and uranium and water greed.  That drove over 300 murders on Pine Ridge:  wars financed and armed via the U. S. Government.

Yes I will. Tell the stories about how important AIM was/is.  And I’ll deal with the heat, the attacks, the blog people ghostwriting an onslaught of hate against AIM.  I am still here.  And my books are now, keeping our stories  safe.  My first book about AIM, for Anna Mae Aquash, is in the permanent library collection at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C.  Until they burn like Alexandria’s books, our stories live.

So here is today’s story.  Sorta in the book.  But not like this.  A NEW one for you all, tonight.

Nearly everyone in Indian Country knows parts of this story. Still. There are some new pieces, here.  So hang on.   A lawyer named Barry Bachrach once helped Leonard Peltier.  Then he left the defense team, a few years back, moved away from Peltier. Now he is the attorney  for a man named Arlo Looking Cloud.  Who is serving a life sentence for the killing of Anna Mae Aquash, an AIM warrior back in the 1970’s.  Looking Cloud has been co operating with the “feds” for nearly two decades (see legal "proof" here).  To try and gain freedom.  To “strike a deal”.  He’ll tell  a variety of stories, about who did what and when in old AIM.  To Annie Mae. Hoping he can get out of jail, if he just tells them “what they want to hear”.  Which is:  “who ordered Anna Mae killed”???   The Feds already know who killed her.  Hello.  But they want Looking Cloud to name some of the old AIM guys, so they can continue the war against AIM, for all the young, new generation of would be activists to watch, the lynchings.  To be afraid to resist. Idle No More. Comes to mind.   Lynchings in town squares were always made public, so everyone would flinch and be good slaves.  “this can happen to you”, they say. Ancient tactics, still being practiced:  the push to “hate AIM” is 21st century,  lynching campaign.

So. Today. As I write this, Arlo Looking Cloud is still telling stories to help the lynching of some of his own People.  In documents given to me two weeks ago by his lawyer, Bachrach, one page stood out, one statement took it all home for me.  I included just one page from the manifesto of court docs sent to me by Bachrach, which were  meant to convince me that a “conflict of interest” exists in Looking Clouds case, and that we should now—all of us in Indian Country who have been inside this story for half our lives, or more---we should all now believe that Looking Cloud is a hero and that he deserves to be free because his lawyers in the murder trial were not keeping his interests in their heart.  Their defense.  That they had “others” they cared about protecting.  At Looking Cloud’s expense.  The case that Bachrach built around this is full of Exhibits, a butte of them, strung along the red Road like telephone polls, from the Mohave to the Adirondacks.  These court documents stack themselves against one another like crooks trying hide from a SWAT sweep.

I can’t keep the truth hidden.  So I say.  This. Nothing in the case which Bachrach is crusading has the conviction of a warrior, an honest man, a moral cause for Love and Peace. Truth and redemption, honor or Justice.  Looking CLoude pleas for mercy with the Courts, and Bachrach believes  him.  Apparently.  Looking Cloud says:

“ I’ve been granted immunity since ’94. I don’t know what happened. In ’94 all they wanted me as was a witness. In ’94 they gave me a paper, and if I cooperated – I’ve been cooperating since 1994, and I don’t see why I’m here today. And they don’t honor their own agreements....

I think I’d like a little bit of time to to think about this, because the agreements that you all made with me, you guys never followed through, and I cooperated since 1994.” *

These Looking Cloud’s pleas are on the  ONE page  of all the Bachrach court documents which I DID  include in my book. Because they say it all:  "I cooperated since 1994". Are  we REALLY are supposed to honor a man who rather admits he will say and do just about anything.  Pleaing  for mercy with the Courts, at the expense of history.  I asked for an interview with Looking Cloud before I wrote this piece,  before the second book went to print.  His lawyer refused. To allow Looking CLoud to talk with me.  Said “maybe when he is free again, he’ll talk”.  Seriously?  He is already talking, but only to Feds. Apparently.

Still. A lot of people actually believe Looking Cloud holds the keys to truth.

And they want us  to rally around Bachrach’s case, because the popular-speak is that “those old AIM were pigs.  They only cared about themselves and THEY killed their own”.  Looking Cloud was found guilty, despite his willingness to confess to near anything they wanted him to say.  But.  Hmm. Looking Cloud is still in jail, even though Bachrach has indicated more than once that there is a reduced sentence, because “Looking Cloud co operated”. And somehow these white guy lawyers can’t see that Indians are still hated??? That the fact that we are still alive, is a threat?

In my new book,  I included only the  one page (mentioned above)  of all these documents which were went to me on Jan. 4, 2013,  at my request.  Because the rest of them do not tell me anything about the coercion, the lies, the death threats and FBI activity in AIM which lead to the war, which continues. To take lives.  And twist them.  Into underworld myths which spit in the eyes of Truth.  Still. I have posted them all---as sent to me---on a  blog in case you want to see “justice, in action”.

Me??  I am still waiting for Peltier’s lawyer Michael Kuzma and his attorney friend Daire Brian Irwin’s efforts, in Buffalo, NY.  They are trying to get FBI files on the lies which prevail about informants sent into AIM.  Back in the day.  Informants who may STILL be alive, and wandering through emails,  my blogs,  my life , YOUR lives, as you read this.  I  Remember. And so should you.  There is always more to the story. We have been here before.  And we will return again. Iktomi.

*Note on Looking Cloud statement:

quote above,  found in the following text: “Document On February 26, 2004, a jury found Looking Cloud guilty of first degree murder (aiding and abetting). On April 28, 2004, this Court (Piersol, J.) sentenced Looking Cloud to life imprisonment. Looking Cloud filed a notice of appeal on May 3, 2004. While Looking Cloud’s appeal was pending, he appeared before a Grand Jury on October 19, 2004. During a colloquy before the Grand Jury, Looking Cloud indicated that he had been cooperating since 1994, and questioned why his prior cooperation had not been honored:…”
