Soul Searching: Phoenix Police Use Out Of State Unitarians to Harass and Expel Phoenix Radicals From Public Event

Breaking News

Phoenix Arizona is not a quiet place in terms of politics. The atmosphere across the state has been extremely hostile, combative and oppositional for years. There is not a lack of things to do when it comes to struggling against reactionary forces in the valley of the sun. A lot of history and analysis can be put into any action or event, just due to the history and social forces behind it.

So, with that said here is a quick update skipping most of the analysis on events that transpired over the weekend. This is relevant due to the nationwide radical crackdowns and isolation attempts currently happening over the past 6 months.

The Unitarian Universalists (UU's) held their nationwide GA in Phoenix Arizona over the weekend, it ended as of last night. Many of the local Phoenix UU's have been active in immigration struggles as well as Occupy. They decided to have a mass vigil at Tent City Saturday Night, Tent City is the outdoor jail that I believe Germany still has a non extradition treaty to Maricopa county due to. A clear target, that has been targetted before by other liberal groups. Their GA was attended by thousands so the event was bound to be fairly large.

Over the past bit, the valleys police forces have been ramping up their attempts to isolate radicals. This has not only extended to anarchists, vaguely radical and Occupy folks have been targetted as well. Basically, the same pattern that is happening everywhere. It is worth it to point out that the police, have prior to Occupy, contacted church groups asking them not to work with radicals in Phoenix.

On Saturday night word started to come out that people were being harassed by the police and out of town UU event organizers. Important points:

The police directed out of town Unitarian Universalist peace police towards anyone they deemed radical telling them to kick them out

This was not one isolated incident, this happened for hours at different places in the demonstration with separate groups of people or individuals

The police also used the event to harass anyone that did not seem like they were with UU's, specially Occupy folks, this ended up including some Unitarians as well

Groups kicked out included people with children, long time organizers and friends of people targetted

This was a generalized attack on the radical movement in Phoenix. For whatever reason, which I am sure will be analyzed sooner than later, the police used out of town activists to sow division and isolate radicals.

The day after, Sunday, there was an uproar, the Unitarians had a public meeting where they apologized and attempted to make peace. Take this and share it with folks who might still be unclear about what we are dealing with. If you are reading this and have other information to add, feel free.

Soul Searching: Phoenix Police Use Out Of State Unitarians to Harass and Expel Phoenix Radicals From Public Event

As a Unitarian Universalist, an anarchist, and one of the out of town Witness Team (peacekeepers) involved in the coordination of this event, I would like to give some clarity to the UU perspective and response to this incident.

Many of the UUs involved in this event were indeed from out of town, and thus were unaware of the particular dynamics already in existence between local radicals and certain members of the Phoenix Police department.  Many of those working as peacekeepers were also new to organizing and large scale rallies and may have been acting out of a nervousness with how they had been asked to participate in holding the space for everyone.  As a UU, I regret that this played into the development of the problems between local radicals and a few Witness Team participants.

The Phoenix police most definitely used UU members of the Witness Team who they targeted as most unfamiliar with their roles as peacekeepers in order to first instigate friction and then ask local radicals and anarchists to leave the event.  These members of the Witness Team acted outside of the role they had been asked to play by the UUs and by our partner organizations in creating a space for all participants to be involved in the vigil, and acted outside of our UU value of "respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person" in the ways they expressed themselves to the activists.

The UU Right Relations team and many local UUs began meeting about this issue on Sunday as soon as it became clear that members of the Witness Team had acted outside of what they were asked to do and outside of our values in order to give forum to those hurt by this action and develop awareness for future events and clearly discourage such divisive actions from happening in the future when UUs participate in these types of events.  I would encourage anyone directly impacted by the behavior of individuals associated with the UUs to please bring those concerns directly to the UUs so that we can better plan for future actions and develop clearer guidelines for peacekeepers that make it clear that no peacekeeper is to act as an agent of the police or nor is identity to be used as a sole reason for removal of any individual from an event without a specific behavior being identified that endangers the event or other participants.

Again, I am deeply sorry that UUs were involved in the event in this way, but I want to make clear that this was not the policy of the UUs, nor a way in which we wish to continue to behave.  We do not believe in removing anarchists from our events on the basis of their identity, and many UUs and some ministers in the movement identify with the values of anarchism or self-identify as anarchists.  If you wish to further discuss this, please feel free to contact me via email at uu4life@yahoo.com, contact the Standing on the Side of Love campaign, or contact the UU churches in and around Phoenix, such as the Valley UU Congregation or the UU Congregation of Phoenix.
