The Historical Rise of Capitalism and Corporations
with Ariane Fischer and Jerry Krantman

For this session, Ariane will look at the historical origins of capitalism as a mode of production, engaging in a critical review of Marx’s concept of “primitive accumulation” through the lens of contemporary interpretations of the process of “accumulation by dispossession” and feminist approaches. Jerry will explore the historical rise of corporations and corporate personhood in the United States.

Ariane is an assistant professor of intellectual heritage at Temple University. She received her PhD in 2009 from George Washington University. Her primary interests are Marxist theory, feminism, and continental philosophy.

Jerry, a longtime political activist, was involved with the Inland Mendocino County (California) chapter of the Alliance for Democracy for ten years. Until 2005, he ran an online political radio station called American Dream Radio. He has an MA in psychology from West Georgia College
