So I've been watching this whole business about the shooting of Rep. Giffords in Arizona, and pretty much shaking my head. It's a pity, especially since innocent people got caught up in it-including a child, which is unconscionable; and it's getting more pathetic by the moment because the victims of this senseless tragedy are losing their humanity as they become pawns in a media extravaganza and an argument over illegitimate politics.

From the early indications, it would seem Jared Lee Loughner has some serious mental health issues. His YouTube videos have gone viral-they present an incoherent mishmash of ideas that really can't be defined. If he is as he seems, he doesn't really have the ability to posses a clear, coherent ideology; and as such, there is no way to assign a political motivation to his action. Some political ideation may have filtered into his head; but it's garbled and confused by his perception of the world around him.

Not that that 's stopped anyone from trying to assign an ideology to his actions. Surprisingly, to me, the liberals have got the leg up on this one, and it appears the media has jumped into their camp. The neocon rightists are scrambling, trying to respond to this, but they are failing miserably.

The initial liberal contention is that 'inflammatory' statements from rightists provided the atmosphere for this tragedy to occur. Given Loughner's apparent mental condition, I'm not sure this applies in full. But it's quick and dirty, and plays well on the news and pundit shows.

Part of the problem for the rightists is the Tea Party. The racist associations, and the macho false populism of the last couple of years have given the liberals a great deal of ammunition to work with; and this time around, they don't seem to be shrinking from using some of the rightists beloved tactics like playing fast and loose with the facts, and stretching the rhetoric here and there to fit the situation. After 20+ years it seems the lessons of Limbaugh have finally sunk in.

And the rightists just can't deal with it. They just can't seem to believe this is happening, and they are not formulating any sort of coherent response; instead, they are giving the liberals more ammunition-like this Wall Street Journal Editorial featuring the tedious style we all have come to know and love. Multiple stories are circulating about various people deleting various things; Sarah Palin's gunsight map is gone, as is the site that hosted it; Palin's been deleting tweets and so on. Unfortunately this isn't hard copy that you can physically destroy. It's the internet, and just because you delete something, doesn't mean it disappears everywhere. I see conservative posts on Facebook-not just on this, but on anything and everything these lot can think of that is bad liberal stuff: Obama's 'corruption'(their clueless version, not the reality), global warming(really). All of these are rather angry.

The media seems to(for now) have abandoned it's 20+ year tradition of pandering to the rightists. At this stage of the game all that can be done is speculation as to why. Perhaps they've decided they've had enough of the Tea Party and this is an opportune time to chuck 'em under the bus-I recall a time when Ronald Reagan was considered a crazy-that sort of attitude may be coming back around on their part.

Perhaps the powers that be are realising a perceived or an actual partial 'shift to the "left"' may be the way to forestall an actual shift leftward-the only viable hard left in this country is anti-authoritarian. You can do the math on that one.

It's not a concept without precedent. Read up on FDR. He was a rich elitist, but he was wise enough to realise that if he didn't give something to the masses, he was staring down the barrel of a Communist revolution. Look at your Marx: the conditions he predicated for a proper Communist revolution existed in the US in 1933. Had the Party infrastructure been more developed, it could have been a possibility. FDR's great unsung genius was that he made capitalism safe for the world, and it worked great until people started dismantling it.
