Anarchist info on Wikipedia threatened

It is a minor skirmish, as battles go. The question doesn't revolve around deep principles, nor ideological divisions. Rather, the issue is one of documentation-- have the Wikipedia editors who explained the concepts of Workplace Democracy and Workers' Self-management adequately researched and recorded their sources? These two topics, which explain concepts important to many anarchists, are in danger of disappearing from the English language version of the user-edited website, possibly for good.

The English language version of Wikipedia alone has more than three million articles. According to web traffic site Alexa, http://Wikipedia.org is the 7th most popular website globally, and number 6 in the United States. Alexa identifies its readers as "users who browse from school and work." The Pew Research Center has described Wikipedia as "especially popular among the well-educated and the college-aged." While its reliability has sometimes been open to question, in 2005 the journal /Nature/ released a study indicating that Wikipedia's accuracy nearly matched that of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Any editor on Wikipedia can nominate an article for deletion. Accepted reasons are quality, a lack of notability, and potential for improvement. The two articles which have been nominated for deletion fall short in the area of sourcing. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia presents material that is an overview of published writings. In encyclopedia-speak, it is reliant upon secondary sources, and these sources must be footnoted within the article.

The fate of the two articles will depend upon the persuasiveness and -- to a much lesser extent -- the number of comments written by editors who choose to weigh in on the proposed deletions. Comments by interested parties who are not experienced Wikipedia editors are usually frowned upon, and may have an adverse impact on the discussion.

In the meantime, it is worth noting that the very model of Wikipedia -- an information source edited not by a hired staff, but rather, by those who wish to participate -- is a concept worthy of promotion.

The Workplace Democracy entry there is pretty substantial. Did the entry get expanded after the "nomination for deletion" was added?

I have a lot of criticisms of Wikipedia, but I won't rehash them here. I invite anarchists to contribute to Infoshop's anarchist encylcopedia project.

These two articles will easily survive the AFD process.  The premise for bringing these articles to a deletion discussion is weak as the issue seems to be that they are poorly sourced and need more references, as some of the article may include original research (a big no-no on wikipedia).

Wikipedia will continue to have broad coverage of anarchism and anarchist principles.  If you're interested in helping out, Wikipedia's Anarchism Task Force maintains articles related to anarchism and could use more active members.
