When They Kick Out Your Front Door, How You Gonna Come?

Anarchists in Trouble

On October 1st, 2009, at 6:00am, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (a union of local police departments and the FBI), kicked out the front door to our home—an anarchist collective house in Queens, NY, affectionately known as Tortuga. The first crashes of the battering ram were quickly followed by more upstairs, as the police broke in on 3 sleeping people, destroying bedroom doors that were unlocked.

When They Kick Out Your Front Door, How You Gonna Come?

On October 1st, 2009, at 6:00am, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (a union of local police departments and the FBI), kicked out the front door to our home—an anarchist collective house in Queens, NY, affectionately known as Tortuga. The first crashes of the battering ram were quickly followed by more upstairs, as the police broke in on 3 sleeping people, destroying bedroom doors that were unlocked.

Three more people, awoken by the most unpleasant means of bounding footsteps, splintering wood, and shouting voices, waited in the basement—their turn at drawn guns and blinding lights came quickly.

We put our hands out where they could see them. They ordered us out of bed. They wouldn’t let us dress, but they did put a random assortment of clothes on some people. We were handcuffed, and although the upstairs and downstairs groups were kept separate initially, we were soon all together, sitting in the living room, positioned like dolls on the couches and chairs. We were in handcuffs for several hours, and we were helpless as our little bird, a Finch we had rescued and were rehabilitating, flew out the open door to certain death, after his cage had been battered by the cops in their zeal to open the upstairs bedroom doors by force. We shouted at them, but they stood there and watched.

And they stood and watched us for hours and hours and hours. 16 hours to be precise, 16 hours of the NYPD and FBI traipsing through our house, confiscating our lives in a fishing expedition related to the G20 protests of September 24th and 25th. The search warrant, when we were finally allowed to read it, mentioned violation of federal rioting laws and was vague enough to allow the entire house to be searched. They kept repeating that we were not arrested, that we were free to go. But being free meant being watched by the FBI, monitored while using the bathroom, not allowed to make phone calls for hours or to observe them ransacking our rooms. Being free meant they took two of us away on bullshit summonses, and even though this was our house, where we lived, if we left, we could not re-enter.

Three of us stayed to the bitter end. Three of us stayed to watch the hazmat team come in to investigate a child’s chemistry set, to see them search the garage on an additional warrant, to sign vouchers for all the things they confiscated as “evidence”—Curious George plush toys, artwork, correspondence with political prisoner Daniel McGowan, birth certificates, passports, the entire video archive of a local media collective, tax records, books, computers, storage devices, cell phones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs, flags, banners, posters, photographs and more than can be recounted here.

The apparent impetus for this raid came over a week ago, when two members of our household were arrested, once again at gunpoint, in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. They are accused of being devious masterminds, of “directing” the rollicking G-20 protests, of using technology such as Twitter to “hinder apprehension” of protesters. The two were held on bail, one fetching the ridiculous amount of $30,000 cash, and released 36 hours later after the bond was posted. As of this moment, no additional charges have been levied against the two, nor against any other housemates in the aftermath of the raid.

As anarchists, we are under no illusions about what the State is capable of. We are not the first anarchists to have our house raided, and unfortunately as long as the State remains, we will not be the last. We are, along with other targeted individuals like David Japenga, the outlets for the impotent rage the authorities feel when they lose control, as they did during the G-20 in Pittsburgh. We, that beautiful we, that include Tortuga House and all who find affinity with us, refuse the rigid forms the authorities try and cram a world bursting with infinite possibilities into—He is not a leader, she did not act alone, they are not being directed. Repression is a strategy that the state uses to put us on the defensive, to divert our energies from being a proactive force and instead deal with the terms it has set. We will not lie and say this has not left us reeling, but as time and our dizziness pass, we know that friends surround us. Our resolve is strengthened by this solidarity, and we will not be deterred by this state aggression.

We wish to thank all of our friends and comrades who have stood by us in these difficult few days. Our lawyer filed an injunction on the raid the next morning (October 2nd) that was surprisingly granted- it forbids the authorities from fishing through our belongings until we head back to court on the 16th. In the weeks and months to come we will do our best to share developments as they occur. If you want to keep in touch or find out how you can help please email us at: tortugadefense@gmail.com.

I didn't know the feds took a life at this raid. It wasn't human, so it didn't make the news, but they took a life nonetheless... all in the name of making their force seem somehow justified. Sickening. We're all with you in solidarity even though we live elsewhere.

Yes you are surrounded by friends! Sorry that you were surrounded by pigs for so long. Perhaps the finch will make it. I know its a tough city for a little bird but - they are tougher than we think. I'm sure it will miss you. The pigs were information gathering. They better give back your shit!!! Correspondence to Daniel McGowan? He is already in a "communications containment" unit of some sort. Sometimes, one does ask oneself just how far up your ass the state can go... its pretty far. However, one thing they cannot break, (if not our doors) is the burning in our hearts. Tis bright as any supernova found in the nether reaches of black space.

Of course the State will try to connect the events of Pittsburgh to the residents of Tortuga. One does not have to break the law to become the target of extreme prejudice and aggression from the State. If laws were broken in Pittsburgh by the many thousands who showed up, such is history...

Like Seattle/WTO; then too the Joint Terrorist Task force was commissioned, and launched upon the anarchists of the Northwest, now too, are the authorities' roving eye looking for someone to blame for the spontaneous expression of discontent simmering in hearts everywhere... that we saw manifest itself in Pittsburgh. I never thought I'd say "I wish I was in Pittsburgh," but that day I did.

This type of aggression, requires more than benefits. We cannot afford to be passive. Must mobilize a defense for the court of public opinion which is controlled by the corporate media, some rare exceptions withstanding.

We must define what is unacceptable and dangerous - NOT the State and corporate controlled media. These tactics of intimidation by the State must be exposed as UnConstitutional and illegal - both in the court of public opinion, and in the court of law.

Meanwhile, fuck the police.

From a different perspective, what good is 'networking technology' if houses are raided when it finally used for a reason?

This raises a particularly good point. Txtmobs and Twitter, facebook and myspace, im and email (especially unsecured im & email, although these two options provide the most security), while having their merrits, also have very real and very immediate dangers, which should be well-understood.

Seriously? Why not ask, "What good is resistance if it pisses off the state?"

1) This is by no means the first time this kind of technology has been used in this kind of context.

2) This house raid prolly has more to do with harassing specific people (possibly in the hopes of getting info off their computer) that the state dislikes than actually being about tweeting during the G-20.

3) The charges and prolly even the house raid will all in all likelihood be overturned and found to be without cause.

i have to agree with CaseyFord on this one, we need to use every tool we have, at least until the state takes our ability to use it away.

i think if we ever got close to a serious revolution in the US they'd shut down cell phones and the internet pretty quick... look at honduras' coup regime and how they banned communications when zelaya returned.

communications, both mass and interpersonal, are so critical to social movements. probably the most critical tool we have.

Oh, I'm not saying we shouldn't use certain technologies, it's that there is such a buzz about all these networking sites, and we have actually used them for a purpose (other than stalking people or making it look like you have more friends in real life), and the state has shown that when we do, we will pay for it. I'm saying this conversation should come up with everyone who uses said sites.

And as for 'shutting down the internet' during a social upheaval or when the state is super-vulnerable, they have already been talking about doing just that in mainstream news articles.
Along with if we ever get to 'terror-alert color red' then that means we will have martial law and all have to stay inside our houses and such, once again, those have been discussed in mainstream news articles a long time ago.

The number of people not arrested due to the use of this technology is greater than the number of people arrested due to it. That's why it pisses of the state.

i just listened to NPR read a letter someone wrote about how NPR's ATC covered an anti-war protest in the 60s on its first broadcast and described the police movements in real time, and some guy was listening to it near the protests so he'd know what was happening and "could avoid it."

i think this is clear over-reaching, and if this crappy case goes through, i think a lot of journalists will be pretty fearful of reporting and pissed that this case happened. it's an obvious infringement on free speech. folks working on this should really try to work that angle and get the MSM covering this bogus bullshit. that's the only way to keep it from happening again, to embarrass the shit out of them for acting like the fucking gestapo they so yearn to be.

If anyone has heard some of the mention in some of the Establishment media (in a sinister tone, of course) of the cops having found (gasp!) a pound of mercury in that guy's house, here's a little basic math and science:

Mercury is really dense stiff (denser than lead, in fact). Wikipedia lists the density of mercury as 13.534 g/ml. Water is, of course 1 g/ml. So a pound of mercury is 16/13.534 = 1.18 fluid ounces! Hardly a big cache.

Heck, it could be the sum total found in a few old thermometers and switches. Or maybe it's a vial of mercury in an old chemistry set. The guy's a steampunk, and steampunks are just the sort of tinkerers who would have dusty techno-junk floating around the house.
