Mapuche communities in conflict are reclaiming territory from large farm estates and forestry plantations. Wallmapu, Mapuche country, extends from the colonial borders of southern Chile to Argentina. The contemporary conflict is directly descendent from the war against Spanish colonizers, and later the Chilean state. The current government is actively using the antiterrorism law against Mapuche community members. The law was developed by the Pinochet military dictatorship to put down revolutionary organizations, and it permits the prosecution to employ unidentified witnesses, through the use of hidden faces and scrambled voices.

Confirmed premeditated murder behind the back of weichafe
translated from País Mapuche

Jaime Mendoza Collío is the name of the 24 year old weichafe murdered by police. He was from the community Requem Pillán; the peñi (brother) participated in the reclamation of the Fundo (farm estate) San Sebastián, under the control of the latifundista (large farm proprietor) Sergio González Jarpa.

The events occurred in the area of lower Malleco, near Collipulli, where militarized police from Santiago attacked community members at the estate in question. The police operation ended with eight community members detained; several of them were injured by gunshots—and all were family members of Jaime Mendoza, who was killed by a mortal shot.

According to the version of the story of the repressors, a non-commissioned police officer, Patricio Jara Muñoz, shot the Mapuche community member with a 9mm pistol in “self-defense,” supposedly defending himself from a shotgun attack by the peñi.

This has been proven untrue in recent hours. Personnel from the Legal Medical Service of Angol and Temuco and the investigation by the PDI (Investigation Police), confirmed that the mortal shot entered through the back and exited the right side of the thorax, causing the instant death of Jaime Mendoza. Also, they did not find shotguns, cartridges, or other evidence that the peñi was armed.

Additionally, numerous witnesses saw that when the group fled the police, they were without arms other than their wetruwe (slings) and a few wiño (large sticks). The body of the weichafe was observed from a distance by police, who would not permit anyone to get close. This version of the story has not been successfully denied by anyone.

The carabinero (cop) is being summoned by the military prosecution, under arrest by his comrades for five days, a period of time in which the military prosecutor will decide decide whether or not to process him.

It must be remembered that the body was in the hands of police until it was turned over to Legal Medical Service. Community members went to request the body, but without anyone to mediate, they were repressed with teargas and rubber bullets by police, injuring numerous individuals, including members of the press.

Once the body was handed over to the family and community of Jaime Mendoza, the group continued to the regional government and the prosecution of Collipulli, where they manifested their condemnation. They later occupied Route 5 South, raising barricades. They entered Pidima, and later they enacted justice on a forestry plantation from the company Mininco and the house of an estate owner, Juan de Dios Fuentes

Cynicism from the Chilean government

The police branches have reinforced their watch over all of Wallmapu and the cities that have shown support for the Mapuche communities, anticipating a general condemnation of the violence from the Chilean state.

The government came out in defense of its violent actions with a discourse that ignored the premeditation on the part of police, presenting the violence as the consequence of Mapuche actions. “Nothing justifies the violence in the Araucanía and people should understand that the only path to a solution to the legitimate demands of the Mapuche community is dialogue,” the government spokesperson said announcing a trip of a committee to the zone in order to “find a solution to the problems.”

This murderous policy is reaffirmed by the assistant secretary of the interior, Patricio Rosende who said, “the government maintains an unwavering policy to condemn the violent events. This is not a way to solve the demands of the Mapuche communities; this only causes pain and suffering.”

At this time, there is a visitation for the deceased peñi from the community Requem Pillan. The community neighbors Requem Lemun, where in 2002 the peñi Alex Lemun was killed in similar circumstances. The community has announced that the funeral will be realized this sunday.

The Chilean justice system should condemn the carabinero who pulled the trigger, but surely, the murderous policy of the state that employs a strategy to exterminate the Mapuche community will continue. Mapuche justice now.
