Anarchist in Chile dies from explosive device

South America

Comrades,

We bear tragic news from here in Chile.

During the early morning of May 22, we lost our beloved comrade Mauricio Morales Duarte. According to the bourgeois press, Mauricio was transporting an explosive device in downtown Santiago. The device exploded unexpectedly, and our comrade died in combat.

Long live comrade Mauricio Morales! Mauricio joins the list of fallen combatants under the democratic regime in Chile. He was a dedicated and militant anarchist. We remember Mauricio as a youth combatant like so many before him.

Over the last three years, there have been countless non-lethal and low intensity attacks on capital across Chile. These attacks have often fallen near the anniversaries of various days of combat, and they have occurred without arrests.

Police are currently searching for a second person present at the scene of Mauricio's death. They are also raiding various anarchist squats across Santiago.

Man who transported homemade bomb dies by explosion in downtown Santiago

The detonation occurred this morning, while the individual circled near the School of Prison Guards, located on Avenue Matta.

Santiago.-Dead and severely mutilated by an explosion: this was the result this morning of a man who transported a homemade bomb in downtown Santiago.

The subject traveled by bicycle towards the School of Prison Guards, located on Avenue Matta, when close to 1:30 in the morning, the artifact detonated. According to radio Bío-Bío, it was made of a fire extinguisher--filled with gun powder—that the subject transported in a backpack.

Inhabitants in the area awoke, because of the loud noise. When arriving at the area of the explosion, they saw with horror the dismembered body of the subject, without hands and legs, and with a burned face.

Police cordoned off the area, searching for human remains in a radius of seventy meters, while they investigated the identity of the victim and the characteristics of the bomb. After five hours of analysis by specialists, they believe that the man was an adult, and he may have wanted to attack the School of the Prison Guards.

In addition to the homemade bomb, a .38 caliber revolver was also found on the deceased. According to the reports, before the explosion, a telephone call was made to the School of the Prison Guards altered of a possible attack.

According to radio Bío-Bío, there is hope that the tragic event will help reveal information about the bombings that have occurred during recent months in the capital.

The explosion caused damage to several nearby structures, including a childcare center.

If blowing shit up is the most creative thing you can do your cause has little hope. Violence only increases violence. Your revolution has to be fought in the hearts, minds, attitudes of your neighbors. I am sorry for the loss of your friend but the end he found is the same end that path of violence and militancy always leads.

This is a pretty disrespectful comment. It's not okay to exploit the tragedy of one comrade's death as a springboard to denounce his or her tactical or strategic ideas, especially so soon after his death.

Also, and I am now risking eating my own words later, but do you know much about contemporary anarchist resistance in Chile? From what I understand, much of it grew out of offshoots of the the armed "poblaciones" (often, but not always marxist MIR dominanted) who led the defense of autonomously controlled neighborhoods. Armed, militant anti-authoritarian movements have been important to many of the gains the anarchist and left movements have made in Chile, most publicly celebrated on the annual Day of the Student Combatant.

This is sad, but we can celebrate that Mauricio Morales Duarte lived his life to the limits that the struggle took him.

Under the presidency of Nixon, the CIA supported a military coup in 1973 against Allende and his reformist government. Allende erroneously declared that civilians should not launch an armed defense against the military. As a reformist, he wanted to prevent a truly revolutionary situation. Allende assumed that actively discouraging a civilian defense would prevent long-term military rule and a swift return to the democratic state that he cherished. He was wrong. During seventeen years of dictatorship under Pinochet, comrades were beaten, tortured, disappeared, and murdered. The military regime furthered neoliberal policies that kept the national and international bourgeoisie content.

The 80s produced a period of armed confrontation, especially in the poor neighborhoods called poblaciones. There was a nearly successful assassination attempt on Pinochet in 1986. Military rule came to an end through a plebiscite in 1988, but the dictatorship is still alive! It was not a vote that really brought the end of military rule; the ruling classes feared a mass insurrection. This elite included the leaders of political parties that were criminalized during the dictatorship such as the Christian Democracy Party and Allende's own Socialist Party.

These “left of center” parties soon became the new power structure, and they continued the neoliberal policies created under military rule. Capital had a new spokesperson. The parties took control of the military government's intelligence infrastructure, and they continued its techniques of infiltration and repression. During the 90s, the torture and murder continued. We have lost comrades, but we keep their memory alive through every moment of combat! We have learned a lot since the dictatorship. These years produced a revolutionary culture that is in direct opposition to the state, the bourgeoisie, and capital itself. There will be no solution through a marxist vanguard. We are militant anarchists.

Yes, violence only produces more violence! We act in self-defense; their violence will be responded in kind. We have been beaten and tortured. We have already won the hearts and minds of many neighbors. Our conflict is lived every year in the poblaciones, universities, and Mapuche communities. We are at war.
