Protesters Kick Racist Speaker Off Campus

Anti-Racist Action

Sometimes victories come out of nowhere. In these tough times, that’s worth remembering, and radicals in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, NC were recently fortunate enough to have a big reminder…

On Tuesday, April 14th, a new white supremacist group on campus called Youth for Western Civilization (?!) had scheduled ex Republican Congressman of Colorado Tom Tancredo to speak on the University of North Carolina campus. YWC is a new national organization, with local chapters on campuses around the US, which uses thinly veiled language around heritage, identity, and cultural pride in western civilization to hide a fairly obvious white supremacist agenda. Their founder Marcus Epstein, for example, is an explicit white supremacist who comments on blogs such as stormfront.org, and the organization’s website (westernyouth.org) has a traditional symbol of Italian fascism as its banner.

Fortunately, things didn’t quite go as planned for the organization. Posters had already been wheatpasted around town and campus letting folks know a known white supremacist was to speak on campus, and when Tuesday night came around, the room in Bingham Hall was completely packed, standing room only. There were also at least half a dozen police doing a perimeter around the building, as well as a few inside the classroom where Tancredo was planning to speak. In the building’s lobby, folks handed out little sheets of paper encouraging people to chant or shout in unison when Tancredo said certain words (ex: “America..” and everyone hisses like an angry cat). A few hundred yards away outside, a rowdy protest with chants and banners was getting going.

When the president of YWC stood up to introduce Tancredo, he was immediately booed and shouted down, with chants of “racist, racist” and yells that interrupted every other word. He was clearly flustered, and unprepared for this sort of reaction, and Tancredo was yet to even make it inside! Before the asshole could finish, he was interrupted for a final time by loud chants coming from the lobby of clapping protesters screaming, “Shut them down! No racists in our town!” Our friends had made it in the building! Those of us undercover inside the classroom started chanting and clapping with them, as well as playing a game of ”marco polo” as a way to commemorate all that western civilization has given us. The group outside started trying to push itself in the room, and scuffles with police ensued.

Somehow, by sheer luck, Tancredo slid his slimy way through one of the two doors, and approached the pedestal. He’s a creepy looking guy, kind of short, with the ugly smile only a politician’s mother could love. Before he could begin to talk, however, two more of our people in the audience rose up to hold a long banner in front of him that read, “No Dialogue with Hate.” We all started chanting along with it, until two pigs dragged the banner holders outside the room. When they opened the door, however, the protesters outside pushed back, and the pigs responded with pepper spray and tasers.

UNC campus is usually pretty tame; things like this don’t happen very often, and while many of us were not students and have been to plenty of rowdy demos, we were nevertheless surprised at the cops’ behavior. The lobby was quickly cleared, with some of us going back and forth between the room and outside to seek out a medic and to announce what was going on. As the group outside regrouped, Tancredo attempted to resume his speech. He was once again interrupted by the presence of two more banner holders, and the group outside began banging on the building’s outside door.

While disruption and chanting continued inside, drowning out the ex-congressman, the group outside of about 30-50 students and community members moved to rear of the building, the side in which the classroom is located. Demonstrators then began banging on the windows of the classroom, screaming at the racist inside. One of the windows was smashed in the process, at which point it seems that Tancredo was informed by either his bodyguard or the police that the situation had become too volatile for him to continue. As he was being removed from the side of Bingham, one of the protesters shouted that Tancredo was leaving the building, and the entire group started running after him. They were unfortunately stopped by a group of police, and decided then to regather in front with protesters who were leaving the building, bewildered and victorious. A short rally out front proceeded, in which protesters chanted, held banners reading “smash white supremacy by any means necessary” and “no one is illegal,” and announced further meetings centered on budget cuts and the economic crisis.

A liberal “dance party for diversity” that was purposely scheduled at the same time as Tancredo’s speech in order to prevent our disruption, was, needless to say, a total failure. In the future it would be wonderful to see a more explicit critique of the rhetoric of "diversity" when employed by white liberals, particularly when they use it as a way to mask their belief that white supremacists have a "right" to organize.

Militant disruption of anti-immigrant and white supremacist organizing is only going to be increasingly important in the next few years, as the pacification of liberals, Obama’s presidency, and the economic crisis will all make fertile ground for racist organizing. While UNC and other college campuses are hardly the most likely demographic for white supremacist growth, they are a source for funding for public speakers like Bay Buchanan, Tom Tancredo, and Marcus Epstein, who could then funnel those funds into more threatening groups. YWC was formed largely to serve this very purpose. The Anti-Racist Action network has fallen somewhat into disrepair in the last 5 years or so; it would be a perfect time to revive these kinds of explicitly anti-authoritarian, anti-racist groups.

Liberals’ backlash against this successful action has already set in. It would be great if in the future we had a clear message set out ahead of time as to why there’s only one way to deal with fascists, instead of scrambling to present that message after the fact. This protest was hastily assembled by an ad hoc network of student groups and community members, and, while it was successful, having an explicitly anti-racist action style body ahead of time might have made it easier to avoid this backlash, or at least better explain our motives and critiques.

This is just my take on the events as they unfolded, as an anarchist from just one affinity group of sorts, and I’ve tried to only report on events that I directly witnessed. If others were there and want to chime in, that would be great.

More of this! This is great stuff!

The analysis about the growing importance of militant anti-authoritarian, anti-racist organizing and action is spot on. If there were an overnight crisis in this country (I'm talking about something quicker and sharper than the economic "crisis" folks) I definitely worry things would swing to the right. This could be evidenced by the massively attended, decentralized "tea party" protests organized today for tax day.

For all the mudslinging that goes on in the infoshop.org comments about whether anarchists should care about having a decent image, I want to say that ARA is a simple cause to explain and an easy in on showing that direct action gets the goods and government is useless in the fight against oppression. It also brings up really interesting questions about free speech rights, which I think really highlights the anarchist position.

Thanks again for putting on such an awesome action. Very inspiring and I hope it catches on.

it seems to me like your action + their action = pretty fucking explicit critique right there... props!

word. although again i think the way actions speak for themselves is not to be underestimated.

... although i would have to add that banners or other messaging addressing the enemy as simply "hate" itself, not the way racial structures are deployed to shore up class society, is missing the mark

One telling moment in the slideshow on the linked site (in terms of media bias)... there is an officer pepperspraying, and the caption is "A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, sprayed mace at protesters..."

Police aren't supposed to get to remain anonymous, it doesn't matter what they wish.

...anti-immigrant fucking nazis.

also, tancredo is going to be on MSNBC tomorrow (on hardball i think), i'm sure he'll have to talk about it on there.

way to go!!!!!!!!

Good job! We had a similar situation at Humboldt State a few months back when Walid Shoebat (a supposed former PLO "terrorist" who is now a self-proclaimed fundamentalist Christian who thinks Islam is the number one threat in the world) came to speak. Luckily the cops didn't attack us (though they did try and remove a few of us). The president of the Campus Conservatives did assault one of us though.

It's important to disrupt crap like that. Be sure to update us if any criminal charges get filed, as your student newspaper website suggests might soon happen, so that we can jam up the school with calls.

Fun Fact:
The symbol of Italian fascism on YWC's website is fasces, a symbol of authority in ancient Rome. Guess where else it appears? Congress!

Has everyone seen the new trailer for the new Tarantino film which is literally all about killing nazis?

(Infoshop wouldn't let me post the URL, so just go to youtube and type in "Inglorious Basterds")

I think we can definitly get some good propaganda out during these screenings, as well as using it as a springboard for fighting fascism.
It comes out in August, so we have time.
Not to mention the movie looks badass!

"No Dialogue with Hate"? Oh brother.
I suppose I'll be the lone dissenter here. The post mocks, w/ justification, the squishy 'dance for diversity,' and yet exhibits no queasiness with those who espouse the 'hate speech' ideology, which was hatched by Boomer liberals to justify state/bureaucratic policing of words and speech that might hurt our li'l old feelings. Tancredo is a reptile, no argument from me, though I hesitate to call him a 'white supremacist.' The fact that he's 'short,' though, is pretty horrible.
As for the guy who lectures about the dangers of Islam, I don't know who he is, but I've opted not to heed the ubiquitous injunction that we are to show 'respect' for 'other' faiths. Do whatever you want in your houses of make believe, but I'll not 'respect' these ludicrous and puerile superstitions, whether they be Judaic, Muslim, Christian, Pagan, Hindu, or whatnot. That guy's speech was disrupted because he is a 'hate' peddler? What criterion is in play here? What must a speaker be about to say before it warrants a pre-emptive slap-down? If you simply can't resist collaborating in the spectacle, can we at least hope for a wittier critique?

I don't understand this comment.

If this story was about a pacifist, "speak out" style event against racism then I would understand your focus on the banner's language- but it's about the *direct action* people took to shut the event down. These folks weren't just complaining about Tancredo's "hate speech" or waiting for an authority to step in and do something for them, they shut it down themselves. Personally, I think it was a good idea on their part to use that banner to try and pre-emptively go beyond the bullshit "free speech" debate that confronting racists always ends up in.

Also, while Tancredo may not conceive of himself as a white supremacist, the fact of the matter is that he is. In a wider sense, because he is a politician of a country founded on genocide and slavery of people of color. In a more acute context, because he is using his white privilege and political ruling class power to criminalize and demonize immigrants, mostly latinos whose native countries are being colonized and neo-liberally pillaged by the US military and market forces. It can be useful to understand the schisms and ideological trends of the far-right; but when it comes to their organizing I don't care if it's a neo-nazi, grand dragon, hammerskin or racist suit and tie politician- they need to be called out and shut down.

The internet is difficult terrain for sensing tone, so let me be upfront and say that this post came off as simply contrarian without much to offer. I can understand the wariness of falling into the trap of fumbling over what constitutes "hate speech" and what people are allowed to say, but quite frankly it's not as much about what Tancredo has to say as what he does as a politician in a racist, white supremacist institution. Before throwing around the "L" word, please try and suggest some more helpful ways for emphasizing an anarchist/anti-state/anti-bullshit legislative "solution" to racism in this kind of organizing. We'll definitely need it as the far-right picks up its organizing in reaction to Obama, lest we end up fulfilling the fascists' charge that we are Obama's front-line thugs.

I've tried to keep this response to points I would feel comfortable saying to someone's face, hopefully you can do the same.

a couple of things:

-funding for Tancredo shot up 500% the day after this protest
-the cost of the broken window comes out of the salaries of workers at UNC (I know this because my parents are workers there)
-several of the latina/latino protesters sat down to listen during Tancredo's speeh because they cared about hearing what he said because it affects them. they obviously did not get the chance to engage him in a dialogue
-shouting "Liberal" at everyone who actually feels that in some way this was an issue of free speech does not make you right

-funding for Tancredo shot up 500% the day after this protest

>>>Post a link!

-the cost of the broken window comes out of the salaries of workers at UNC (I know this because my parents are workers there)

>>>They are lying to you. No one's salary gets docked if a window gets broken at their work. That's absurd.

-several of the latina/latino protesters sat down to listen during Tancredo's speeh because they cared about hearing what he said because it affects them. they obviously did not get the chance to engage him in a dialogue

>>>People who think they are going to change his mind by dialoguing with him are naive. If he was just some dude, without institutional power to destroy people's lives, I would say he could talk and dialogue with people all he wanted. It's not about speech, it's about him being the person behind institutional ACTIONS that oppress people.

-shouting "Liberal" at everyone who actually feels that in some way this was an issue of free speech does not make you right

>>>Yup. But, blaming people for standing up against their oppression makes you seem like someone who doesn't understand the power relationships involved in the relationship between the protestors and Tancredo.

Free speech is fine. Directing institutions to enforce with state violence policies that destroy lives is not.
