The First to Fall: Protesters Topple Icelandic Government

Breaking News

Unrest has spread across the globe as people are losing their jobs, watching their savings vanish before their eyes while banks and other multi-billion dollar institutions are bailed our by their governments. Iceland, a typically tranquil country, has been turned upside down with social unrest, and recently gained the notoriety of being the first government toppled by its people through street protests.

Protesters disrupt the first day Iceland’s parliament.

The country had the world’s fifth highest per capita income in 2007, but is now experiencing Unemployment, once at zero, is expected to soar after Iceland sought a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.

A small island country of just 305,000 people is generally laid back with little conflict but after Iceland’s currency, the krona, collapsed and the banking crisis left many Icelanders with unpayable debts, the country fell into almost daily protests. Eggs and toilet paper were thrown, youth scuffled with riot police and for the first time since 1949 the government retaliated with tear gas on demonstrators.

When parliament reconvened after Christmas Break, the politicians were barricaded inside for hours as thousands of protesters smashed windows, set off smoke bombs, banged pots and honked horns demanding the resignation of the ruling conservative party. Many of the other protests took on similarly confrontational tones- including protesters pelting the car of the prime minister (who has now resigned) with eggs and paint.

On January 26, after denying the possibility of holding early elections, Prime Minister Geir Haarde announced the resignation of his cabinet and the collapse of the current coalition government. Social Democrat Johanna Sigurdardottir is expected to fill the vacancy, becoming the first openly gay head of state. Still, despite new leadership and promises to also dispense of the now loathed Central Bank of Iceland, this will unlikely satisfy the protesters, who have widely reached the point of losing faith in all politicians, echoing the sentiments of the Argentinian protests of 2001 that were so well encapsulated in the popular chant "Que Se Vayan Todos- They All Must Go."

The future of this small island nation is unsure, though it is certain that popular resistance has already forced large concessions to the people of Iceland, sending shockwaves to the leaders of neighboring countries, who have anxiously watched the first government fall to the monumental failures of capitalism.

i suggest: "The country had the world's fifth highest per capita income in 2007, but is now experiencing growing unemployment. Once at zero, unemployment is expected to soar after Iceland sought a bailout from the International Monetary Fund."

But where is the big coalition that organized these people to make the government dissolve?
People have been arguing lately that organization comes before insurrection... how can these stupid people self-organize without a coalition to join?
They need to be led, or they will not know what to do...
silly masses...

The problem with anti-organisational approaches isn't in having insurrections. It's holding on to the gains and making demands that are eventually satisfied. If society fails to provide for the level production required to sustain life, then people will immediately start looking for *anyone* who says they have a solution. Generally this means falling right back into authoritarian patterns. Having a horizontal mass organisation, well used to organising can fill this role. Let's not repeat the mistakes of history.

But Rowan, you can't repeat a mistake that never happened on a historical level, all the examples of capitulation in revolutionary history come back in some way or another to the reification of organization.

No one is anti-organization, organization like like existence itself happens, you don't need a political gang of experts telling you what it is and how to do it.

The government is still there. This is just a normal change in leaders, albeit one without an election.

yeah i don't see what the big deal is. it seems like the most interesting part of this is that the police haven't used tear gas on demonstrators in such a long time. show's that it's possible that reactionary elements may be met with reaction (surprisingly enough). i certainly hope the best for any popular resistance anywhere, iceland is no exception. i just think this is EXTREMELY misleading, like fox news. yeah... that's right.

Really? I was very surprised that this hasn't been getting more attention. I think it's actually a pretty big deal. Sure, the government is still in place, but through street protests the people of Iceland successfully ousted the conservative government. Think about if we had forced the Bush administration to resign early. Also, the incoming prime minister is vowing to fire all the bigwigs at the Central Bank of Iceland. Another important victory in my opinion.

I too am interested to see where things go next. Will the protests be absorbed by the changing of the guard? In one article it said that the green/socialist party organized a lot of the protests. They stand to gain quite a few seats in the upcoming election. Is that going to appease people or will the sentiment of "everyone must go" stay strong?

I also wonder about the IMF loan the country took out. It seems like there should be continued resistance on that level. Either way, any time people force the ruling elite out of office I get excited (especially when the news coverage features circle a's and black flags).

wow, seriously? what is the good of forcing the ruling elite "from office" when those offices continue to be occupied by others? who would care if "we" had made the bush regime resign early? the point is to destroy states not to shuffle their leaders around. this isnt an argument about whats happening in iceland, just a response to how you seem to be approaching it, much like your obama thing -- i certainly hope that people, and especially pro-revolutionaries in iceland dont think like you do about "lesser evils" of state power.

It's good because it gives people a sense of their power. If people don't have have faith in their own power and potential to impact the dominant order and rule themselves, they aren't going to impact the dominant order or rule themselves. And in a lot of places, there is no widespread sense of that power and potential.

Why the hell is an isolated riot awesome (which it is) but people forcing the powerful to their knees (if only for a moment) not?
