Anarchist Prisoner Harold Thompson 1942-2008

Long time prisoner and jailhouse lawyer and activist Harold H Thompson has died Tuesday November 11th of heart failure.

Harold born in 1942 to Irish parent in West Virginia, USA was an anarchist activist during the 1960’s and 1970’s. His exploits, including expropriation of capital to fund further activities, landed him in prison on more than on occasion over the years.

In 1978 however the mother of one of his children was brutally murdered by a man named Crawley who was soon released after agreeing to turn states evidence. After his release he heard bragging in a bar that he was going to kill Harold's child and the other child who had testified against him.

He was within a few day shot in a bar by a masked assailant who escaped unidentified.

Harold was the natural suspect and was after a brief manhunt arrested and sentenced to life plus fifty.

In his time inside he has been a fearless activist and prison house lawyer.

More information on his case can be found here along with a collection of his writings.

Harold's were among the first prisoner writings I came across when I was first getting acquainted with that aspect of anarchist organizing. It's heartbreaking that he passed away in the grip of the state. May we fight hard enough that no one has to die inside a prison ever again.

Except prison guards, perhaps. They can die wherever they want.

This sucks. In Modesto we distroed many copies of his 'stay free by shutting the fuck up.' It was always popular and still is, among prisoners and people on the street.

I used to write to Harold and he would write me back with the most beautiful cursive handwriting I have ever seen. He was one bad motherfucker and I'll never forget him.

Love you bro,
Danny

I used to write Harold on a semi regular basis but it had been awhile since I had heard from him and we had lost touch. It heart breaking to hear of another Brother passing in the belly of the beast. Let us honor his memory by redoubling our prisoner support efforts. RIP Brother your struggle is over but ours is just beginning.

Love and Rage,
Dirty
