‘Gitmo On The Platte’ Set As Holding Cell For DNC

DENVER – CBS4 News has learned if mass arrests happen at the Democratic Convention, those taken into custody will be jailed in a warehouse owned by the City of Denver. Investigator Rick Sallinger discovered the location and managed to get inside for a look. The newly created lockup is on the northeast side of Denver.

Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.

“This is a secured environment,” Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff’s Department told CBS4. “We’re concerned about how that’s going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive.”

In past conventions, mass arrests have taken place.

With Denver’s jails already overflowing, new space had to be created and officers trained.

Each of the fenced areas is about 5 yards by 5 yards and there is a lock on the door. A sign on the wall reads “Warning! Electric stun devices used in this facility.”

CBS4 showed its video to leaders of groups that plan to demonstrate during the convention.

“Very bare bones and very reminiscent of a political prisoner camp or a concentration camp,” said Zoe Williams of Code Pink.

Williams was one of those arrested at the Republican Convention in New York in 2004.

“That’s how you treat cattle,” said Adam Jung of the group Tent State University. “You showed the sign where it said stun gun in use and you just change the word gun for bolt and it’s a meat processing plant.”

Gale would not discuss the facility at this time.

“We want to make sure we got our game plan set,” he said, “We want to make sure the entire procedure is laid out all the personnel know what they are supposed to do.”

The plans were to keep this lockup a secret, at least for now.

The American Civil Liberties Union says it will ask the City of Denver how prisoners will get access to food and water, bathrooms, telephones, plus medical care, and if there will be a place to meet with attorneys.

The protesters have already given this place a name: “Gitmo on the Platte.”

Will the ACLU ever grow some balls and simply condemn this shit as being wrong? The fucking ACLU makes it sound like that this prison camp would be acceptable if it only had some proper window treatments.

By the way, I once had an interview with the national director of the ACLU at their Washington headquarters. They asked me one interesting question: "If I could change anything about the ACLU, what would I change?"

I answered with something that reflects my comments above. I said that I was disappointed that the ACLU was always being quoted as being "concerned" about some abuse against civil rights. I would prefer an ACLU that was "outraged" about stuff or simply more forceful about explaining why anti-rights abuses are wrong. In other words, the ACLU relies on too many weasel words when they fight against abuses.

Needless to say, I didn't get the job as their web communications director. It figures that a "free speech" organization would be just as conservative as any business when it came to applicants freely speaking their mind.

okay okay okay, I'm so fucking excited to read this, and here's why:

yeah everyone in America either thinks its normal for stuff like this to happen (and those people are called republicans) ORRR you have the democrats who should normally (as the public would believe) protect our human rights as blah blah blah...
And of course, in NYC 2004 RNC it was kind of expected that we would be put into prison camps like this one BUT this is 2008, finally everyone realizes how bad everything is and the democrats were elected in 2006 to change all the terrible things 'the bush admin did' and of course nothing changed-

So lets step back and consider what this is to the broad public: we are talking about a political convention of the party who is supposed to be for the people and claim to be opposed to such terrible human rights abuses AND HERE AT THEIR OWN CONVENTION they have erected another camp, a gulag (can it be called anything else, a prison for political protesters?) which just by chance has broken into mainstream press and the cop working security is on TV (who will be fired in a few days, or hours) saying we have to get our game plan ready...

The democrats have political prisons outside of their own conventions for people who oppose their center-right agenda !

I think this is and incredibly huge opportunity to expose exactly where they stand, and how distant they are from the major public. We need to do everything we can to blow this story up and show people who are in love with the 'change man' just how little will change...... however we can

Wow! I'm old enough to remember the anti-war protests against the Viet-Nam war, and how we were jammed into regular old jail cells. Just the pictures of these pens creeps me out, but I believe that is what they want. See you there.

If anybody runs across somebody who is a zealot for Obama and argues that you have to vote for him because he is an alternative, just bring up the subject of this prison being set up at the DNC. This should win the argument for you every time. There is no diference between the two parties.

THE POINT OF THIS ARTICLE IS TO INTIMIDATE YOU INTO STAYING OUR OF THE STREETS!

don't listen to this propaganda. a warehouse is just a warehouse, and filled with hundreds of like-minded people, can be a giant dance party instead of the bleak place they try to portray it as in order to scare you from protesting. i have been to many awesome dance parties in warehouses that look pretty similar to that place.

My biggest problem with the ACLU is the fact that they have actively fought alongside fascist organizations in their attempts to gain city permission to hold public demonstrations. If the ACLU simply stated their absurd constitutionalist amendment obsessed beliefs that neo-nazi organizations SHOULD be able to march in communities of color, regardless of the unanimous opposition of the people in those communities, it wouldn't be much more than just stupid. The fact that they have actually defended these fascist organizations in court battles against city governments is entirely disturbing.
