The 'In Our Hearts Network' is proud to report the Summer Really Really Free Market was a raging success! Over the course of the day we had around 5-600 people stop by St. Mark's Church to enjoy a small taste of what a non-capitalist world may look like, and how we can take care of each other and our needs without resorting to centralized state bureaucracy or cutthroat capitalism.
In addition to the usual assortment of useful stuff to be had, people enjoyed music, ate food, talked and danced with each other, got haircuts, smashed pinatas, learned about their legal rights, vegan nutrition, and anarchists in Latin America, wrote to political prisoners, picked up radical literature, hung out, got tested for hiv or hepatitis, and received help with social services, among many other things. In a world of forced scarcity, there IS enough for everyone.
To come to the Really Really Free Market is to participate in the world we carry in our hearts. If one paused to take in the scene unfolding, one would see the emergence of something more than the sum of the RRFM's parts, a something that we as anarchists dream of: a new world in the ruins of the old. The RRFM is of course only a small beginning, but it is a concrete example to the hundreds of people, most of whom are not involved in radical or anarchist politics, that a new world is possible.
If you would like announcements for future Really Really Free Markets, or would like information on how to set up your own RRFM, please e-mail us at inourhearts@gmail.com
Thank you to everyone who came!
