SHAC Campaign in Vancouver BC

It’s official: SHAC is setting up in Vancouver, BC.

SHAC stands for Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty. The loosely-organized group was set up in 1999 with the sole aim of closing down Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). Located in the UK and USA, HLS is the second largest contract testing lab in the world. HLS are infamous for torturing and killing 500 animals a day in tests for products such as weedkiller, food colourings and drugs. They have been exposed 6 times for disgusting animal cruelty and rule-breaking.

SHAC is a worldwide campaign, and the first of its kind, with SHAC groups in over 18 countries all uniting to target HLS and the companies that support them. SHAC is an innovative campaign, best known for its direct action, in your face approach and for the frequent home demonstrations against HLS allies. SHAC has received worldwide media coverage for the success of its methods, the intelligence of its tactics and the determination of its supporters.

SHAC Canada has been active for several years with many successes. SHAC Canada main core is located in Montreal but has groups in Ottawa, Quebec city and Toronto.

As you might already know, 3 activists from SHAC Canada were arrested on October 31st 2006 in Montreal and their homes and cars were raided. Police seized every single items related to animal rights (flyers, clothes, music, magazines), all the campaign material (flyers, bullhorns, posters, bandanas, camera) and even several thousand dollars.

Those activists are accused of ridiculous charges for organising legal home demos. They were charged with illegal assembly, disturbing the peace, mischief, death threat and restraining someone from fully enjoying their residence. They have many conditions to respect in order to stay out of jail like respecting a district restriction of more than 20 square miles including all of downtown, to not participate in any animal rights demos and prohibition to be in contact with the “victims”. Moreover their telephone lines are tapped, they are followed and questioned by local cops, RCMP and the Canadian secret security service, they were infiltrated by undercover police officers and repeatedly harassed.

The trial is set for November 12 and will last 5 days due to the 31 witnesses police will bring to the court. Since the arrest, the police have been very intimidating toward activists from SHAC and more than 20 of them were arrested and brutalized during demos.

Because of this intense repression, these 3 activists moved to Vancouver and/or maybe Victoria for a couple of months to start the campaign there while things cool down a bit.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

If you think you are someone that can help us directly or you can help us with contacts, please let us know, any help is greatly appreciated.

SHAC activists are planning to be very active and work full time on the campaign in Vancouver and Victoria.

They are planning “aggressive and family oriented demos” several times a week at homes and offices of those associated with HLS. They also plan to distribute info about animal rights and host movie nights, conferences and vegan pot lucks.
