Thousands call for close of Guantanamo Bay prison on Jan. 11, 5th
anniversary of its opening
WHO: Witness Against Torture, Guantánamo Bay lawyers, former detainees,
family members of detainees, Cindy Sheehan, and thousands of human
rights activists.
WHAT: International Day of Action to Shut Down Guantanamo
WHERE: Washington, DC; Guantánamo Bay, Cuba; and hundreds of other
cities around the world from Amsterdam to Australia.
WHEN: January 11, 2007, the 5-year anniversary of the first transfer of
prisoners to Guantánamo Bay.
In Washington, D.C. the day will include: a press conference led by the
Center for Constitutional Rights and Amnesty International (10:30am,
Supreme Court); a symbolic prisoner procession from the Supreme Court to
the Federal District Court, theatrically taking the prisoners' case from
the court that upheld their rights to the Federal Court where their
cases need to be heard (12 noon); and a rally outside the Federal Court
(12:30pm), where people will read stories from inside Guantánamo, do
street theater, and hand out leaflets. Inside the court house we will
bring motions for court intervention and names and stories of those
imprisoned in Guantánamo to the court, holding the court responsible for
these men. There will also be a non-violent civil resistance component
of the protest.
WHY: To demand an end to torture and illegal, indefinite and immoral
imprisonment.
