Several American flags have come up missing in one local town. Tammy Scardino spoke with the police department about the unusual crime. The Blackfoot Police Department does have a suspect. They say the spree that started on Friday affected several businesses and homeowners.
David Miller, Blackfoot Motor Sports: "We always fly the flag whether it's Flag Day or not. It is a symbol of what this country is all about."
Apparently, just in time for Flag Day, American flags have been disappearing in Blackfoot. Blackfoot Motor Sports was hit by thieves early Monday morning. What thieves did not know was that once they stepped foot on the property, their every action was being recorded - including their climb to the roof. Those involved could be charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor petty theft. Police say this sort of a crime is not common.
Capt. Kurt Asmus, Blackfoot Police Department: "It's kind of odd for this many flags to be missing all at the same time. Occasionally, you get one here and there, whether it's the wind or if someone steals it."
As for Miller, his business started selling flags and poles years ago because no one in the area carried them. He says the theft is more annoying than anything - that stealing so many flags goes beyond an innocent prank. Police would not comment about the suspect or a motive since the case is still under investigation. Miller says he is baffled as to what statement the alleged suspect was trying to make.
David Miller, Blackfoot Motor Sports: "I've heard more about them and they describe themselves as anarchists. So, I don't know what their point is, but I have more flags."
Twenty-two flags have already been recovered. Those who reported theirs stolen should expect a call from the police.
