German 'Robin Hoods' Give Poor a Taste of the High Life

News ArchiveA GANG of anarchist Robin Hood-style thieves, who dress as superheroes and steal expensive food from exclusive restaurants and delicatessens to give to the poor, are being hunted by police in the German city of Hamburg.

The gang members seemingly take delight in injecting humour into their raids, which rely on sheer numbers and the confusion caused by their presence. After they plundered Kobe beef fillets, champagne and smoked salmon from a gourmet store on the exclusive Elbastrasse, they presented the cashier with a bouquet of flowers before making their getaway.

The latest robbery is part of a pattern over the past several months, suggesting that the thieves deliberately set out to highlight what they perceive as the inequality inherent in German society.

However, the authorities do not agree. Bodo Franz, a police spokesman, said: "They get off feeling they are just like Robin Hood. There are about 30 in the group. But whatever their motives, they are thieves, plain and simple."

Carsten Sievers, the manager of a luxury supermarket in the wealthy Blankenese area of Hamburg, recently watched the robbers run off with trolleys full of expensive foodstuffs, including Kobe beef which, at more than £100 a pound, is always on their illicit shopping list.

In another recent swoop, the gang emptied a groaning buffet table in a top restaurant into sacks, while one of their number held up a sign saying. "The fat years are over" - the title of a hit film currently doing the rounds in Germany.

In internet statements, the gang have made a point of saying their booty is distributed to Hartz IV recipients - the poorest of Germany's long-term unemployed. The benefit is named after the disgraced Volkswagen personnel director Peter Hartz who, before he lost his job with the car-maker in a prostitutes-and-bribes scandal, devised the new means-testing which is loathed and derided by society's most economically challenged.

When the gang robbed the gourmet store in April - triggering a massive police investigation that cost £20,000 in taxpayers' money without an arrest being made - they left a note behind saying: "Without the abilities of the superheroes to help them, it would be impossible for ordinary people to survive in the city of the millionaires."

Police say they are concentrating their investigation on a loose collective of anarchists and malcontents called "Hamburg in Vain", to which they believe the superheroes belong. But they admit there is a certain panache and skill about their robberies. indicating a strong criminal element as well.

The gang are also behind black market cinema tickets which they distribute free to the poor, and they have printed leaflets telling passengers how to dodge ticket inspectors on the city's underground and buses.

Mr Franz said: "They try to make crime fun but are politically motivated."

this is all well and good and very entertaining, but it's a rather problematic mode of resistance. this sounds incredibly vanguardist and is ultimately completely unsustainable. if this was coupled with more organizing and helping to establish/empower self-sustaining and autonomous communities capable of self-management, control and resistance then i could see this as a starting point to organize around and provide the basic necessities so the disempowered communities could begin to reempower themselves.

lighten up. not every direct action needs to accomplish everything. some can be purely for fun.

Indeed. Plus it's giving people another days meal who could otherwise not afford it. I'm tired of anarchists acting as if they need to be serious all the time. Every act of disobidience goes towards further fragmenting current society and pushes us closer to a revolution.

word. i agree - which is why i began the post the way i did. i cannot tell from the article what the ultimate aims of these actions are, but like i said earlier this could potentially be a start to something that goes deeper than stealing from the rich to give to the poor. besides - most anarchist actions that i've seen over the past years have /not/ been oriented towards bigger picture projects - which i think is problematic. so it's not that i don't think this is fun and rad or whatever - but if we're going to talk about serious change (and i do think this kind of action could have it's place in fighting for serious change) we need to be seriously critical in the actions we take and in how we look at the actions of others.

... i think part of the point of these actions is to show how easy it is to pull this type of shit off? any pack of folks could mask up and do this!

It is actions like these that are precisely the organization of the working class. Looting and theft appear as criminal to the authorities but to the working class it is self-valorizing activity that produces autonomy from capital. Of course, you can't simply steal your way out of capitalism, but it's not a bad start.

did you ever think that maybe these people ARE the disempowered community members you speak of? it always seems as soon as working class people gain some analysis and take action against the system, there are always those who see them as not part of the working class anymore. how can it be vanguardist to take action to help your friends and neighbors and yourself?

The quote "The fat years are over" comes from the movie: "The Edukators" which is a good film, I don't know if you can get it in america but it's worth looking for.

You can get it in the States (but if I remember correctly, there's a scene that didn't make it into the U.S. version.) Regardless, it's a great film to check out and it's exactly what came to mind when I saw the headline.

It's been a year or so since I've read about it, so I don't remember all the details. Apparently, there is a scene towards the end of the film that shows a boat. It's not in the US version and from what I've heard, the scene doesn't alter the meaning of the film that drastically.

my question is, how are they distributing the stuff?
A food bank seems innapropriate, plus, they might give the stuff back to the people it 'belongs' to.
FNB in masks also seems unlikely...
Hopefully we'll find out eventually.

1337 it is much more vanguardist to demand that every action that oppressed people take against capitalism must follow the rigid 12 point platform that you announce from the comfort of the keyboard than for people to steal from the rich and share the proceeds with their community.

this is awesome, looks fun as hell, and definitely has the potential to make anarchism a lot more popular.

A hell of a lot more popular than other activities that, well, can only be spun as violent. Let's see the news reporters talk very negatively about these fun caricatures! They can't!

Actually, I think you'd be surprised how well this would go over stateside. Our culture loves entertainment and capers. If you look at the films people love, a great deal of them have criminals as heroes. Even those who act for selfish reasons. Americans unconciously love those who break the laws, and conciously love them too so long as they do it with style.

These people are great. While so many of us in this world today see the injustices of our societies, we stand by with no efforts to change it. These are the people whom define "superheroes". Those who bare the courage to stand against adversity and help those who can not help themselves. For those who condemn there tactics I ask, what have you done?
Further more who have they hurt? No one! Even the businesses they steal from gain from there actions from the advertisements of this story. The resources that are mis-used to capture this group is the only form of injustice that has been committed.

I myself would truly love to see this in the states and would support it whole heartedly.

The name of the group "Hamburg Umsonst" would be correctly translated into english as "Hamburg For Free".

Although the word "Umsonst" can also be translated as "pointless, in vain, unneccessary" in this context its other sense of "for free, gratis, without cost, without incurring cost, without paying, without a price" is more appropriate.
