Worldwide Anti-McDonald's Day on October 16th!

By Hamburglar

Every year there is a Worldwide Anti-McDonald's Day on October 16th [UN World Food Day] - a protest against the promotion of junk food, the unethical targeting of children, exploitation of workers, animal cruelty, damage to the environment and the global domination of corporations over our lives. Launched in the UK in 1985 by London Greenpeace, the October 16th international protests have continued to grow, despite - and maybe even because of - McDonald's notoriously unsuccessful legal efforts to silence their critics with libel writs.

In 1999, the only year in which we systematically monitored where the protests took place, we recorded 425 protests and pickets in 345 towns in 23 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, USA. In 2000, there were widespread and large protests throughout Italy - at one store in Rome 300 demonstrators succeeded in getting it closed for the day. In 2002 for the first time, McDonald's workers joined in the Day of Action - there were walkouts and other forms of protests in many countries co-ordinated by McDonald's Workers Resistance (an international network of McDonald's workers - see www.mwr.org.uk).

Over 3 million 'What's Wrong With McDonald's?' leaflets have now been handed out in the UK alone since 1990, and it is now distributed worldwide in over 27 languages.

WHY NOT ORGANISE PICKETS AND PROTESTS IN YOUR TOWN, ESPECIALLY ON OR AROUND OCT 16th?! Please copy the 'What's Wrong With McDonald's?' leaflet at:www.mcspotlight.org/campaigns/current/wwwmd-uk.pdf

I'm more concerned about Walmart than I am Mcdonalds.

Target Wal-Mart if you like, but there is a substantial history of activism against McDonalds to build on.

i work at a grocery store, and i just realized a great way to fuck things up at a place like Wal-Mart is just to get shopping carts and fill them up with stuff and leave them around the store, so people have to put all the stuff back onto the shelves again. preferably take stuff from all over the store, not just all from one aisle, and take as many different items as possible, smaller is better so you can put more in one cart, and then just leave it somewhere and get and new cart and do it over again.

this would be cool to do in conjunction with some other kind of protest/action so the fuckers at Wal-Mart know there is a reason why there is tons of cartfuls of stuff they'll have to pay people to put back, slowing down stocking and the whole wal-Mart machine.

...or you could actually do something to hurt the corporation, rather than just
pissing off the workers.

yeah i worked in a grocery store and i gotta say if i caught on to what
you were doing i would follow you into the parking lot and scream at you
maybe even beat the shit out of you, even though i agree with other
kinds of direct action against wallmart. dont make the lives of its wage
slaves any shitier than they already are. i always hated when people just
left shit all over the place for me to clean up and rearange.
if you want to piss of the ceos at wall mart help unionize their workers.

Doing something like this in isloation might be annoying to workers, but if thousands of people did it at Wal-Marts around the country it would seriously fuck them up. Even more so if this direct action was sustained over a period of time and directed at the trucks that bring in the new crap.

Let's not fetishize workers who work for stupid corporations we want to get rid of. All this noise about "actions hurting workers" is regurgitated right wing anti-direct action rhetoric. You CANNOT create social change without creating some messes here and there.

yes, but these messes should be made where the CEO's can't ignore them,
where it impacts the CEO's more than the workers, not the other way around.

Yeah, but we don't want to alienate potential allies. It would better to trash McDonald's HQ than to destroy one of their shops.

Not everybody can get to the McDonald's HQ. I agree that it would be better to take it tot he gated communities of the rich, but destroying a McDonalds is pretty effective too. All of the attacks against McDonalds over the past 5 years have turned into a huge PR headache for the company.

destroying a mcdonalds is fantastic. What isn't fantastic is just annoying the
workers. annoying the customers, keeping the customers from getting in...
that's much better.
