Broadcast message from root@pred:

Sending all processes the TERM signal.

Thus ends href="http://conway.cat.org.au/~predator/blog-index.html">Predator's
blog.
At 02:15 on 5 June 2004, the messages finally reached the processor:
Predator was no more.

Who was he?

In 1997, Predator helped set up href="http://www.cat.org.au">Catalyst, a radical community activist
tech collective in Sydney,
Australia. They went on to provide information technology services for a
wide range of activist and commmunity based organisations around both
Sydney and Australia. In the process, knowledge was shared, skills were
learned and taught - from building and maintaining hardware to writing
computer code. It was from this original initiative that an
open-posting model of web publishing was developed for the J18 protest
that occured worldwide in 1999. The codebase was named ' href="http://www.active.org.au">Active' and went on to power the href="http://seattle.indymedia.org">first Indymedia site. As they
say, "the rest is history."

However, Predator's influence extended further. An Urban Explorer, he
was a part of the Cave Clan -
whose membership extends around Australia and internationally. The tribe
has, over the years, explored literally thousands of miles of
underground passage ways, drains, mines and other components of the
urban vasculature. Amongst other things, Predator was also a dumpster
diver, anarcho syndicalist, molecular biologist, squatter, and well
known good guy.

With the realisation that he had a fatal illness, Predator did not
stop, but continued to play an active role in all spheres of his life -
until the very end. Predator is dead, but his legacy
lives on.

A big part of Predator's legacy is his extensive href="http://conway.cat.org.au/~predator">website, sharing his
knowledge and
experience in detail on subjects ranging from "thoughts on the
information-systemic nature of reality" to how not to get
laid - "Getting Laid" a complete guide to wireless networks. He even
wrote 35,000 words of
his PhD "Paradigm" which will be made public via a link from his home
page. He also wrote a 230 page weblog
on his experience with cancer from the time he was diagnosed until three
days before
his death. His blog portrays a poignant story which documents
thoroughly the ups and downs, the triumphs and turmoil of everyday life
in this, our battle for a better world.

On Wednesday, 2 June, three days before he died, he wrote the following:

Why are there diseases with cures and without? Why are there situations
into
which we get ourselves and never extract ourselves completely? I am
fearful as
I look down the grass hills around Neutral Bay in my mind's eye because
I cannot
go to these places anymore.

this is the final, scariest part of stuff I will write with or about
anything
and I find myself resigned, wordless and empty in its face of coming
fury.
These are the protective measures of a rabbit who you might find staring
down
your headlights one night. Even a well-informed rabbit. I feel so
scared of
this stupid pointless, empty death and yet I feel in some ways its just
doing
its job. It has not singled me out, it's just doing its orders. I am
grateful
for the chance to think of perhaps that there were cures that may have
once
awaited me in different food shops, eating choices, or whatever else
might have
availed me but of which I did not avail myself. I just did not get
lucky and
take any of these cures at the moment I was of incorrect supervision.
